What Techno Producers are ITB only?

Post by Markus Wolf »

A friend of mine and me are having a constant under lying discussion over the years hes convinced that you must own hardware and mix OTB in order for it to have a certain sound quality and for it to be a good track in general. I keep telling him this is not the case and that when youre listening to a good track you're not going to say hey thats from massive or thats from a prophet and most sounds are so twisted or unconventional it would be impossible to tell. Does anybody know of producers who pretty much work 100% inside the box. Not talking about sending you're track out to be mastered afterwards just the production side of it. This seems so ridiculous that im asking but im going to let him know who does and just to shut him up once and for all :)

You won the argument btw.

It's a classic but worn out discussion that just keeps on going. But I understand the enthusiasm to the ever going topic.

There are tons of great ITB productions out there. Getting hardware doesn't automatically make the producer a champion at creation.

There is a thread around where I, a while back, posted a few tracks for people to guess which ones that were made purely ITB and purely outboard.

No one was able to tell which was which but Ronny & Steve had the right solution to the problem; it didn't matter!

Hardware (especially "analog") is the most overrated production tool ever. It's unbelievable that, nowadays, with this quality and quantity of plugins out there, people continues to buy that narrative. Totally fucking stupid.

I get the pleasure of "playing" something, physically... I still play and record my electric guitar, for example (I noticed that I get less "obvious" soundscapes and fx from it). It's fine.
If you limit yourself to hardware, you lose TONS of sound design, audio mangling and modulation possibilites. All that crazy Ableton digital stuff.

Practical example: you buy a 2000$ drum machine and you have a nice boom-boom-cha 16ths pattern.
With a Drum Rack + 2 Max for live plugins, you can get an unquantised rhythmic hell that modulates itself.
I started with hardware, with the same prejudice, but nowadays it just doesn't make sense.

I would be interested to see that video, here's one of his studio from a few years ago and it's an ITB setup. Btw does anyone know what exact Akai model that midi controller is?

Hardware isn't a single tool. if you're comparing hardware with software, or itb vs otb workflows, you might describe them as different platforms that can both be used (successfully or unsuccessfully) for music making. Dismissing hardware as a 'tool' doesn't strike me as particularly insightful.
It's unbelievable that, nowadays, with this quality and quantity of plugins out there, people continues to buy that narrative. Totally fucking stupid.
I prefer twisting knobs (fnarr fnarr). I've already alluded to the fact that my work isn't the best, but what gives it energy and drive is what's added when I jump round the room as I make it. Plenty of people don't want or need that and can work just as successfully with plugins and a mouse. That's not how I do it, and i dare say the same is true for lots of other people too.

Horses for courses. Anything else is overly prescriptive and misses the point of music making entirely.

If I was at all able to remember, I would have already posted it when I said it. ;)
I'm one of these people that constantly has far too many tabs open.
At the moment I have 38 tabs open, so you can imagine I do tend to forget where I got the info from at the time... :P

Maybe he just happened to be at someone else's studio for a collab ?
I visually remember him being in front of a big mixer, and using some kind of drum machine if I'm not mistaken,
but it must have been at least 4 years or so since I saw that video.

In any case, who cares, right ? ;)

APC40 mk 1 for Ableton, kinda the thing they did before Push, but actually compliments it well. It's a decent controller and probably cheap these days with the mk 2 version of it coming out since.

Nowadays also if you want to produce in a jammimg style, jumping around and feeling the shit you make, you should just optimalize your workflow to that while working itb. I mean place those flowers a bit further and make some place to dance.. :D But seriously, buy a midi keyboard with a bunch of pots or some other midi gear.. No excuses, wether its otb itb, jamming stlye or mouse only, make good shit, feel the good shit... As others said...
