OP-1 anyone?

Post by mr.chielos »

Since two days we have a new noisemaker aboard which means I won't be able to do a lot of music hours as the misses needs me after a c section.
Inspired by the all in one hardware synth thread I was thinking of getting a small toy I can use on the sofa that doesn't look to intimidating ;)

Does anyone here have experience with the Op1, I mean techno related? since it's quite expensive I'd rather have some feedback from the pro's!!

Thnx all,
C

Well, I'm not a pro, and my experience is limited to a decent demo in a shop, but based on that I'll say this - those things are friggin awesome fun. Quite novel in execution, but seemed very easy to use. It seems to largely dispense with a traditional synthesis interface, but yet has lots of ways to get totally wild sounds. Seems like it's pretty much built to achieve happy accidents. Lots of cool and interesting little bells and whistles. Small but well made. I would love to have one. BUT - it costs too much money for me. Unfortunately I just don't see it being worth the money in terms of serious music production. It's looking like I'm gonna be in a situation soon where I might be spending a few hours a day on a train, and I've been thinking about units that could come with me, and then slot back into the studio when I have a chance. Seems to me an Electribe 2 would actually manage this better while coming in at a third of the price. But if I ever have some money going spare, I'd totally buy an OP-1 just because they are uniquely fun.

think of it what you want, but this a project of a colleague of mine, and he's really loving his OP-1 and always raving about it.
This was all done with the OP-1:

If you really learn how to work this little box, lots can be done.
And it has a built in radio! very important! (all kiddin' aside, this can be recorded on the fly, great for experimental impro performances).

It's conveniently small for travelling (Electribe2 is at least twice the size), but very powerful, but also a tad too expensive.

Yeah, the price is also what keeps me from not having one all ready! Plus the fact that I can't try it somewhere makes it a tough decision. Anyway the YouTubes I've seen all look like incredible fun!!
But most of the video are quite safe soundwise. Can it deliver dirt and grit?

I had one for about a month. It is fun. it is inspiring.

I found I had more fun in ableton and a laptop tho.

It's not really a groove box. Most parts must be played in and recorded like tape. I definitely wouldn't use it to make techno. Maybe make some parts and use it for techno.

My quick two cents.

That's no biggie, I do other genres besides techno.
A laptop would be ideal but I'm looking for something fun and small on the couch.

I've always been intrigued by the op1. Looks like a very creative machine and from the videos I've seen in the past looks very usable to me. But always been put off but the price although it looks like a quality product. Teenage engineering seem like another Elektron type of company with regards creativity.

I have one, I will never sell it...I was about to, when I bought it I was trying to work completely within it while on the road. Didn't get very far with it with that approach. When I got off the road and got the rest of my gear set up, I plugged it into my audio interface and started recording it into Ableton on the fly, and that's where to magic happened for me. It allows me to very quickly and easily come up with very unique pieces of digital weirdness that seem to always fit into my sessions where they are needed and just fill things out. Now I am also incorporating it into my techno and dub DJ sets as well.

I feel like that if you buy this gear, you need to sit on it, and think about it. It's so broad in what you can do with it, you could think about it and use it for years and never reach it's full potential. Buy it. Play with it. Record it. Run it through pedals and shit. Don't expect to figure it out in a couple months.
