Windows Cunty 10

Post by Wiu »

I'm getting nervous. My everyday use laptop got the latest 'Upgrade to Windows 10' pop up today. I just closed it, but am kind of expecting W10 to install itself sometime soon. Not the end of the world for that laptop, but potentially big fucking problem for my music production laptop. I doubt all the software I run is compatible and I've read after the update, peoples files have been put in weird places.

Any one had any issues with this malware like Microsoft bollox?

Edit:

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/technology-36367221

I just don't understand how it can be legal to force people to upgrade.

A week ago I woke up to Windows 10 (no kidding), apparently my laptop decided to upgrade it from 7, fortunately there's a recovery section where you can simply recover to your old OS with one click.

There's a 3rd party software called "never10" so far it's been working for me.

I had that auto install shit 2 weeks ago.
Had some driver issues but sorted them out.
When you work with older usb hardware this indeed can give you driver problems.
I had a auto update from 8 to 10.
Never heard of 7 to 10. On my audio workstation I run win7 and I think it's great.
I will NOT update that OS for years because it's super stable.

This is a nice tool to remove MS spying features built into Win10: http://dws.wzor.net/
You can disable the upgrade nag via the registry or use this, he makes very handy tools: https://www.grc.com/never10.htm

Yeah annoying. Still not got the full go ahead from the audio community yet so I'm a total staying with 7 until decent reports come in that 10 is stable for all the things I use.
As a general rule, never adopt a new op system until it has been out for at least a year as it will always have a shit show of problems waiting to surprise you.

The pop up has been there for over a year if I remember correctly I didn't care that much, but mentioned in OP's link it happened while I was sleep and it was rather an awkward experience waking up to a different OS.

I tried it for 2 days, personally I didn't like the interface and tons of undeletable bloatware came with it. Also had problems with TR-8 driver, it didn't auto detect at all.

I recognize that there are valid reasons why people use Windows over OS X (machines are way cheaper, more free software available, not wanting to be sucked into Apple's proprietary ecosystem, etc.). But this reminds me of all the reasons I ditched Microsoft and its bloatware and malware-ridden OS. Not even Apple forces your to upgrade your OS if you don't want to, and I've never had a single problem running audio programs on new iterations of OSX.

Too bad Linux isn't a more viable platform for music, eh?

Not to mention that it's plain fucking annoying and stupid and in general a cunty behavior to force their stuff on users.

No but apple forces redundancy by adding updates that render older versions of OS shitty.
And what do their wonderful customer support suggest?
"Buy a newer piece of hardware"
No, just don't make my hardware redundant you cunts.
Fuck apple, they stopped being good a long time ago.

I don't mean that Linux can't be used for audio production (it can). It's just that there isn't much available for the platform. That's the big impediment.

I have an iMac from 2008 that still runs everything (Live, Reason, VSTs) pretty smoothly. All it needed was an inexpensive RAM upgrade and a decent external HDD. And all the OS X updates are free. So I've essentially plopped down $150 over the past 8 years to keep using that computer, and despite being a wee bit slow compared to my brand new laptop, it still does an incredibly good job considering its age.

The only compatibility issues I have are with 32-bit VSTs that only work if I run the 32-bit version of Live 8. But I assume this is an issue with Windows computers as well?

Don't get me wrong: there's no doubt that Apple are a rapacious capitalistic uber-corp, just like Microsoft. And I take big issue with Apple for making it harder to replace stuff like RAM or an internal HDD yourself on their laptops (this used to be a cinch--even up to 3 or 4 years ago). But I just find Windows to be the worst possible OS in so many ways (performance, security, features, etc.). So I eventually converted my old XP laptop to Ubuntu. It's much happier now :D

I really should make the switch to Linux. I normally just get a hold of the Windows OS hacks once they come out, that allow you to strip back the OS to bare bones. It's how I run all my machines.
Running win7tiny in the mastering studio and the production room and it's super tight.

Is it possible to download the fucking upgrade and not install it immediately but keep it somewhere in a rotten corner? Until you really need to update?

I wonder when the first person will sue them for destroying some work etc. If i'd upgrade now my UAD-1 would be rendered useless. No Win 10 support.

Thanks for the link, Mattias!

I think you can download the upgrade as an ISO. Or so I read.

There are some really good Linux distributions, which can do everything that Windows or OS X can (in theory). And some, like Ubuntu, can squeeze out good performance out of outdated hardware.

The problem is that there just isn't a lot of software out there for Linux. The most viable DAW, to my knowledge, is Ardour, which supports AUs but not VSTs. And it's pay-what-you-want. But it's not as flexible or sophisticated as Live, Logic, etc. Still, might be fun to try out anyway. And doesn't come with the guilt that accompanies using Apple or Microsoft products.
