Jean-Michel Jarre ft. Edward Snowden - Exit

Post by wormcode »

Kind of a surprising team up. It's streaming from Spotify which I don't use but the video is pretty interesting.

What does a lonely whistleblower in Russia do when they have no more information to leak? Start a music career, of course. That is exactly what Edward Snowden is doing. The famed NSA whistleblower has teamed up with esteemed electronic music producer Jean-Michel Jarre to create a track called ‘Exit.’

Haha, this track is pretty funny. It's like psytrance with Edward Snowdon spoken word doing the honours in the breakdown. "if you don't care about privacy who will .... " Reach for the lasers

I have respect for both guys involved but not sure musically this is much to write home about. Apologies to anyone that loves it ;)

Sounds like it was made on an MC-303 groovebox as well.

The 90s are back!

Haha, the irony is it was probably made using about 300k worth of hardware.

Man, I am old enough to have bought that stupid MC303 new back when it came out.
we've got a member here (blnn = bran lanen) who actually does pretty good stuff with it,
but I must have sold it at least 13 years ago (after not having used it for 5+ years)

Fucking JM Jarre.
Honestly, I grew up listening to his music,
but he's been a big joke for at least 20 years now.
Always trying to stay "cool" forever.

If he didn't have such a legendary status, nobody would still care for his shit.
And if his dad didn't have to be stinking rich I doubt he would have ever become this "synth god"
(which was also the case for Vangelis btw, but at least Vangelis doesn't try to stay "cool" as if his life depended upon it)
Nowadays I listen more to Maurice Jarre's soundtracks,
he was definitely way more talented than JM is.

(and really, I used to be a big fan of JM's old synth albums in my youth)

He even cheated on Isabelle Adjani, so she dumped him...
That's just unforgiveable. :D

ow yeah, and how he always has to have himself being filmed in front of all his vintage gear,
even though that track is total shit and could have been done with any piece of gear...

what a wanker...

I also bought an MC-303 when it came out. It was, and is, a piece of shit, but I've still got mine in storage for nostalgia's sake! Maybe one day I will bust it out and subject all of you to some awesome low-res electro and goa trance.

That said, you are right, Hades--this is pretty good stuff considering the machinery:

you should check out some of the guy's DJ sets !!
(he has a site, but you can only use it with google translate, which of course sucks massively)

If you like hyper-energetic 90's techno,
then look no further...

I have yet to discover a set where he plays more than 1 track that I have ever heard before...

honestly, bran is one hell of an underestimated talent !

That's a nice video! I'd rather listen to that than the Jarre/Snowden thing that's for sure.
My friend also got the MC-303 when they were out and I used to borrow it and use it quite a bit. I did like it, but we always always had issues with daisy chaining it to other gear. For some reason it would make others lose sync, or send weird CC messages. Maybe we needed a different or better filter with it. Of course chaining stuff will always have issues, in the end we decided to get rid of it. Still it always stuck in my mind as a cool box.

well, it was the very first groovebox ever made...
that's about the only historical value it has.

I had a listen to the album today. The Snowden one is laughable, if it was done as a pisstake I'd say it was brilliant. But it wasn't, and it definitely isn't. Did amuse me though. But, some of the other ones I actually quite liked. The one with the Orb is pretty cool, liked the one with Yello, and the one with Mills is, hmmm, not sure if I'd actually call it good, but its sorta unique. I'll definitely give it another listen. It's a got a stonking Mills 909 workout in it at any rate. I've got a soft spot for earlier JMJ, but these last two albums are basically shite. I'd go as far as to say there's a decent EP lurking in those 30ish tunes.
