high passing at 40hz maybe makes sense if you are doing live sound at a rock concert
definitely not for techno though

You'd be surprised.
It's not something that should ever be a general rule, but you can cut as high as 40hz.
All depends on the curve and the bass.
I've cut from 40 many times when mastering to get wildy out of control bass in check. Some people have monitors that don't go that low and end up with massive peaks at 30, 40 hz

Re: Cut frequencies under 40Hz ?
are you talking about a steep cut at 40hz?
maybe if the fundamental tone is on or above low E, but you'll start losing important frequency information if there are lower tones
I've worked with bass down to 25hz on a great soundsystem, with pure sine waves in a live set though

Re: Cut frequencies under 40Hz ?
Oh no, no need for a really steep cut, it`s all about context. If there are super lows there in a meaningful way then you keep them there. If it`s just mush then you trim it down.
Occasionally you can cut steep at 40hz and it won`t have a harmful effect.
Depends is the only right answer.
Sure I`ve run down extremely low on soundsystems (especially our own where we ran Turbosound TSW124`s down to 17hz), but it`s rare a system runs as low as 25hz meaningfully in clubland.

Just remember kids, when slitting your wrists.

Re: Cut frequencies under 40Hz ?
nah, too hardcore, too much cutting kills the vibrations! short small cuts so the chicks are impressed!
Re: Cut frequencies under 40Hz ?
Low frequencies are over rated. Cut everything below 600hz. Just fuck that shit off. And whilst we're at it, fuck everything above 15k off too. My fucked up old ears can barely hear that shit anyway.
Thank you for the laughs, debate, new music found, production tips etc etc over the years. I wish Subsekt and everyone all the best for the future. Wiu.

this is pretty much the funniest thing I read in a long long time...Mattias wrote:I always cut all my tracks at 120hz with a 48db filter. Works every fkn time! Amazing
you almost made me spill my beer on my old 'n trusty main set of 88 keys, you fucking Swedish cunt !
I'd personally use a 96db HP filter though, which gets sidechained to move 300Hz upwards every time a hi-hat/snare/cymbal/ride/cowbell or screaming cat-sample comes in !

nah man, a good laugh is worth a LOT these days.Mattias wrote:Ha ha. Sorry!
and my old XV88 has served me well for approx 13 years now,
so some day it's gotta die.
only problem would be that I wouldn't have the cash to pay for a replacement for the moment...
I could also just drink less beer, that might help as well...
(thinks for about 0.5 seconds)
nahhhhh...
