reverb on sub ?

Post by Eliad »

Hey

I have seen some live tuto were reverb is used on bass or even subbass and sometimes it sounds pretty cool. But I have often been told that it should be avoided.

Do you guys use reverb on sub ?

Not really reverb on a sub.. More like sending a kick to a Reverb which creates the sub :)

Except for keeping it mono I would say that there is no right and wrong here. If it sounds good - it sounds good.
You have to systematically create confusion, it sets creativity free. Everything that is contradictory creates life.

Yeah, traditionally it's a no no, but as long as you eq correctly to prevent the mix getting muddy, then sure, I do it myself.

Ask Kareem if he ever puts reverbs on his basses and kicks.

Just one more reason to do it  I like it with a bit of saturation from ivgi

The old "never put reverb on bass" really comes from old recording and mixing days, where part of the mixing process was essentially done by the recording engineer.
And if the bass (as in guitar) was imprinted with reverb when recorded, it could cause all sorts of mix problems for the mix engineer, who was stuck with it.

As we, in electronica land, don`t really separate the processes, it is not so much of an issue.

You really do need to have a handle on your bass before doing so.
Really understand how to EQ your bass properly (and to do that you really need to be able to hear your bass, so don`t do this in headphones as spacial stuff is borked in cans), and how to control your bass.
Most problems I deal with when mastering peoples stuff is with the low end.

So just pay extra care and attention to your low end EQ, and spacial placement.

Ok thanks for all the answers !

I did this short loop in which I tried to put a reverb on a kick to make my bass line. What do you think ? Not too muddy ?
