Yeah, I`ll echo that.
I ended up actually paying for a course to learn FM8, it`s one of my favourite tools but it is ridiculously deep, not a good starter synth.
However, the sounds you can make with it are just bonkers.

I love fm8 but cannot program it to save my life. I really like all the DX sysex stuff you can get for it. I preset hop with it tbh.. Adding fx to make it sound a bit different. It's capable of so much. I should look into it more.
Are there any online courses y'd recommend Steve?

I'd love to do a course on it actually, I lose interest with it too easily...

Hello all. I'm a new poster on subsekt.
Yeh I know this site: http://www.adsrsounds.com/category/fm8-tutorials/
my mate Michael Dzjaparidze used it. He has a projecting creating tracks ONLY using FM8.
His tracks - every single element he has synthesised in FM8 from scratch.

Re: Oscar Mulero's sound...how does he do these synths?
I`ll have to dig around in my archive drives for the lessons I bought. It wasn`t with ADSR it was with some spanish guy, his sound design work was stunning.
Re: Oscar Mulero's sound...how does he do these synths?
One good way to get started with FM7/8:
Dig out a patch with a tonality you like, ditch the envelope settings and create your own rhythmic ones.

I've lost interest with the adsr shit years ago
at the beginning you thought him (later "they") were a little breeze of fresh air into the tutorial country
afterwards they just turned out to be another "buy these preset" retarded company.
all the time bomming you with mails to buy their preset packs...
Sin cambios no hay mariposa

Good tip. I'd also recommend using the morph square. Stick 4 presets you like in there, morph to something you like and save it. Use your new preset with others in the morph square. No talent required and you'll come out with new stuff based on the DNA of what you based it on.
FM8 isn't that hard to get your head around, really. Great synth.

Try making a complex morphing patch from scratch, it`s a super headfuck, it takes years to be able to actually get what you are looking for rather than just random cross modding and hoping for serendipity.Planar wrote: FM8 isn't that hard to get your head around, really. Great synth.
It`s my number 1 fave synth, and it has taken me years to be able to go "right, I want a sound to do this" and then to be able to come close to actually getting that sound.
I mean sure, it`s easy to get your head around the absolute basics, but if you want to wield it like a weapon, it is not easy to get your head around at all. FM synthesis is deeeeeep.
Re: Oscar Mulero's sound...how does he do these synths?
But that's my point. No one seems to want to learn the basics with it. They get put off with the op matrix and think, "fuck that". The ops are easily routable, the envelopes are easily manipulated and you have the x and y ops for "special" functions. Most people don't seem to get that far.Lost to the Void wrote: I mean sure, it`s easy to get your head around the absolute basics,
Getting musical results out of FM is tough. I've read the Chowning paper more than once. But that's nothing to do with how hard FM8 is to use.

The envelopes section annoys me actually, it`s super flexible, but I don`t find it very intuitive, but then native instruments GUI`s generally allways have areas of logic failure.
Re: Oscar Mulero's sound...how does he do these synths?
They're fiddly as hell. I meant more that they're all available on one page and you can visualise how they interact with one another. Envelopes are king from my own understanding of FM synthesis.
My point, that I'm clumsily trying to put across, is that FM isn't the easiest thing to get your head around. But FM8 gives about as good an interface for it as you could expect without limiting you to preset (in the FM sense) algorithms. I get the impression a lot of people don't see it that way.
There is a lot to get out of it, even if you don't know how the ratios should be to get a certain sound. That's where I am with it, and it's still a powerful tool being used in an "educated guess" kind of way.

Yup. That's one of the reasons i still stick with FM7. FM8 didn't seem to solve the UX problems, it's only more feature-laden. Which is a bigtime pity.Lost to the Void wrote:The envelopes section annoys me actually, it`s super flexible, but I don`t find it very intuitive, but then native instruments GUI`s generally allways have areas of logic failure.

It`s one of the few synths I consider worth getting around the interface for, I couldn`t make the music I do without it really.
At one point most of my drums came from it.

Steve - any chance you can remember which course you did? There are loads around but I'm sick of crap tutorials!Lost to the Void wrote:Yeah, I`ll echo that.

Kick + Distortion / Waveshaper + Reverb with filtered out highs and lows emphasis / Some compression. That the recipe, you have to decide for yourself in the current situation how much of the ingredients you wish to pour into the soup.
