The world music thread

Post by mattie »

I been thinking of starting a thread on this a while now, with the varied taste on here Im sure there will be plenty of interesting music to share.
There's a shit ton of terms that fall under the world music banner, tribal ethnic folk pagan etc etc, trying to keep the scope large so we can all hopefully discover some stuff we like or maybe find new instruments or some sample material.

I love the sound of that armenian flute called Duduk

youtu.be/_58AnhnbIgI

Its got a very melancholic feel and a nasal tone. You can find great samples of it on freesound.

Great sampling material so far

More Sufi stuff, Sufi music is based around trance and hypnosis so I think it applies well to techno

Remember hearing Fela Kuti for the first time.
Think it was through a Gilles Peterson tribute show.
Damn funky stuff. Really blew me away.
Not sure if it fits the 'world music' thing tho (?)

A series I really enjoyed was 'What About Me?'. Basically a couple of guys just travelling around the world recording a musician playing. Moving on and letting another musician listen to it and add something to it and so on. Was a good watch. I have it on DVD around here somewhere.
Thank you for the laughs, debate, new music found, production tips etc etc over the years. I wish Subsekt and everyone all the best for the future. Wiu.

Ross Daly is a favourite, he's an Irish master of the Cretan lyre. Basically a living library of almost forgotten eastern scales.

Omar Faruk Tekbilek is another favourite, he's Turkish.

Nusrat Fateh Ali Khan and Zakir Hussain are worth checking out and of course Ravi Sankar.

I fucking love Taiko Drums, again, I`m linking to techno relevant stuff.

Seen Kodo twice now, the sound from the big ass drums is so physical, and it`s such a performance!!

Not really world music as such, but contemporary composition.

As far as I am concerned, Steve Reich fucking invented techno way before Detroit.

This is techno

Loops, polyrhythms, hypnotics, dynamics.

He`s probably my biggest influence when it comes to techno.

Stunning piece of music, I have listened to this on my speakers at home an unbelievable amount of times.
Makes Jeff mills and the orchestra playing the bells a laughable thing really

Piano Phase, where 2 pianists play the same 5 note phrase in a loop, and gently move out of pahse and then relock with the shifted phrases. Utter genius, it takes real masters to play, but it`s techno.
Even more insane here as it`s ONE GUY playing the piece on 2 pianos (careful Hades-Gasm expected) who then goes out of phase and back in again, with himself.

Violin Phase is similar

Listening to Steve Reich's The Desert Music (1985) again, it's great, not as experimental as some of his previous work tho.

Here's a quote I like from the booklet
Steve Reich wrote: I once had a vision where light became a metaphor for harmony, for tonality. [...] You see, I understand that human conventions are, in a sense, the light - a kind of conveyance in which we ride, in which we live, and without which we die. And the human construct that we call our music is merely a convention - something we've all evolved together, and which rests on no final or ultimate laws. And it sails, in my mind, like a ship of light down an endlessly dark corridor, preserving itself as long as it can. And no more and no less.

Terry Riley also deserves a mention when it comes to early minimalistic- and experimental music.
Saw him at the after party of his own show in Amsterdam last week.

Planxty were pretty fuckin deadly. I would have dismissed them as a typical trad band when I was younger (and ignorant!) but they were all seriously talented musicians. Seeing them perform this track was an eye opener. How they keep time is still mindblowing to me. Think the track is called "Smeceno Horo". I presume from the title that it's got a Bulgarian folk origin...

Piano phase really does it for me,can hear the techno in it,should be used as an example of why shifting midi notes can be a really useful exercise.
