What are your thoughts on the buzzword 'EDM'?
What are your thoughts on the buzzword 'EDM'?
In the USA, this is what we call anything made for the dance floor and made with electronic instruments. I just don't like the term personally, the scenes for dance music are pretty splintered and some scenes aren't even aware or don't pay attention to one another. EDM is basically trap, post-Sasha/Digweed prog house, trance, brostep, electro, and big room house as I'm guessing pretty much everyone here knows.
Re: What are your thoughts on the buzzword 'EDM'?
If used for any music that's made for the dance floor and with electronic instruments, I'm fine with it
coz that's what it stands for really. I never understood how it came to mean a specific style
of big room electro or something.

I hate it.
I hate it as a general term for any electronic dance music, because it sort of implies that hard house, trance, techno, experimental electronica and dnb (and many more) are all the same thing.
I also hate it as the specific type of sounds its become to mean, because these tend to be all the cheesy forms that become popular, rather than anything that has any depth to it.

My impression is that it is a term invented by people that have no knowledge of/interest in electronic music and struggled with the different genres, even the most basic fundamental ones so they came up with a catchall term.
But, more likely, it's just Extremely Dull Marketing tactics ..

It's just a marketing term for americans who are too lazy to dig deep (and by deep I mean spending 20 minutes on wikipedia and some youtube links).

Sort of reminds me of the music store trend I saw through the 90s that went from labelling anything electronic as "acid jazz", then it turned to "dance", now it's "Edm". Although I must say anything labelled as Edm is generally extremely terrible, whereas "dance" did contain a lot of decent house and electronica (the prodigy and chemical brothers would have been sold under that label last time I looked, for instance )
Re: What are your thoughts on the buzzword 'EDM'?
I don't give a dime about labels. But whoever brought this up made a clever marketing step.
Then again i like to think that it attracts a huge amount of people who will eventually tick on actual genres lateron.

EDM is just a brand of pop music wearing a dance music hat.
The marketing is all pop, and so is the music.
I wouldn't be surprised if there is some X factor like program for edm at some point.

Urrrghhhh it's fucking horrible. Totally agree with what everyone else has said really. I have nothing else to add apart from whoever coined the term is a cunt.
Thank you for the laughs, debate, new music found, production tips etc etc over the years. I wish Subsekt and everyone all the best for the future. Wiu.

I personally am over it.
ADM is the latest hip thing.
Acoustic Dance Music
I went to see Karenn at Koc festival last Decembuary and they were doing ACM music. They had tons of modular gear, but none of it was plugged in and they were just hitting it with empty soda bottles, and eventually their cocks.
I heard 35 new releases the next month by various artists, all of them sounded like guys hitting bottles and cocks on boxes and stuff.

If it was genuinely concocted to represent all electronic dance music then they wouldn't have felt the need to add a word to the catch-all term we already had and then abbreviate it.
It's a marketing term and nothing else. American kids are bored of rap and are desperate to be sold something.

Re: What are your thoughts on the buzzword 'EDM'?
That is possibly the worst piece of music of all time.
Anyway, I must be honest. I when I've drinken to much, I have caught myself dancing to popular dance music once a while.
I live in a student home so I cant really avoid this mass global intercontinantal genocide thingy.
