Examples of modern, futuristic, forward-thinking techno

Post by Barfunkel »

Techno used to be about the future. Some say it still is. Are there some good examples of music that's clearly identifiable as techno that would be futuristic, forward-thinking, out there, without being just weird and different for the sake of it.

Something released the past few years.

I have real trouble thinking about any tracks that would fit the bill. It's all just, you know, techno. Productions techniques have changed a bit since computers came powerful enough, but the music's still pretty much the same (or worse, as some nostalgic-minded people might say).

Hit me with something really special, I have my faith on you!

Theres lots of people clearly trying to make spacey / futuristic techno and just emulating the shit out of each other with the tiringly stagnant bloopy modular minimal stuff.

Not sure if I would say worse but definately far lower quality on average. People have far less balls and imagination despite having more opportunities now to innovate, conformity and recognition are blatantly higher priorities.

I can only see value in that considering most people make try to make somthing familiar to themselves. It would spawn things much closer to the innovative techno ideal mentioned on here sometimes.

Unfortunately I don't have any music to post although I would love to be able to.

Techno has matured and it's defined. You have to deal with that fact. I wish i would have the tracklist from the last Function set i've seen. That shit was spacey, out there and futuristic as fuck. He blowed my mind at that gig.

I nearly always get a wowfeeling when I hear : Headless Horsenan (edit:go go age-action spellcheck). Bill Youngman.. Paul Birken.. Anything on Singularity.. Some raster moron (edit:lol spellcheck) .. Anything on Combat Recordings.. AnD.. Rory St.John.. Orphx.. eomac.. K.Ray.. Recent Porc.. Erm.. IK, of course.. And our own James Mslwte can make the odd jaw dropper. Listening to all of his music together when he was preparing his set for resonance was amazing.. Hard to define what genre a lot of his non 4/4 stuff is. Surgeon has his finger on teh pulse.. Listen to his Rinse FM show. Great music.

Someone posted a video here of these guys recently, so just discovered them, really great experimental stuff : https://soundcloud.com/sturqen

Always enjoyed Raven : https://archeanraven.bandcamp.com/releases

The last album by James Holden, is just simply amazing, very out of the box, don't know if it completely falls under the techno category

Yes, good call on Sturqen and Raven especially.

I really rate Aoki Takamasa on this tip.
Picked up on his stuff before he released thru raster (was no surprise to me).
Was lucky to catch a short live set from him for the CTM festival a few years back and the grooves he hit blew me away. (The crowd were too cool to dance haha!)
Would also mention (Bristol's?) Emptyset. Wicked sounds.

I think, in general, Techno is long past typical four/four kick vs hat bizniz.
For me it's more about a solid electronic sound that still, in some way, suggests that aggressive attitude ..

Yeah I love Aokis music. The Rhythm Variation tracks are stunning. I like the complexity of his patterns. Quite minimalistic in it's sound though.

I think Systemic has a pretty futuristic techno sound.

Had PA duty during a Kennedy set recently. Selection was on point, even though Shifted and Sigha smashed
it just before. Probably working friday too and we have Cosmin TRG on. Objekt and Function on saturday.
Think all three have played an important role in developing the genre.

I'll back up Kangding Ray and would also like to add:
Eomac
Violet Poison / Obtane
Blawan
Rrose
