Mission Creep - finished but still to mix
This be the first tune iv done since my third child was born - took ages. I call it techno but perhaps this forum will not. I like stuff that sounds different.
I think its good. I still have to do a proper mix down. Is there anything I should consider before I do that? Its quite spiky at times of dense automation but I can get that in the mix.

Re: Mission Creep - finished but still to mix
Nice work,Really enjoyed listening to this one, has a good vibe to it.
Two things that stood out to me as an impartial listener were @ 2.01 when i felt the energy drop slightly(i know this is the point here) i kinda think it may be worth taking apart the notes(destructive edit) from the arpeggio as midi say at 2.09 and use them to introduce the arpeggio fully at around the 2.18 point.
@ around 5.18 i thought the modulated automated notes may be too low and may not need to be used here(felt they worked better from say 5.25 onwards). All of this is of course my own opinion and you can take it or leave it as you see fit.
Looking forward to hearing the finished version.

cool. thanksmattie wrote:Nice work,Really enjoyed listening to this one, has a good vibe to it.
That was the point but you think I shouldn't go so dry? Perhaps introduce the melody slightly... Not a terrible idea. Will give that a go.mattie wrote:@ 2.01 when i felt the energy drop slightly(i know this is the point here) i kinda think it may be worth taking apart the notes(destructive edit) from the arpeggio as midi say at 2.09 and use them to introduce the arpeggio fully at around the 2.18 point.
Are we talking about the modulated bass with the wide arp'd swing at the beginning of that section. Or the melodic component that builds up in volume before retuning to the main hook section?mattie wrote:@ around 5.18 i thought the modulated automated notes may be too low and may not need to be used here(felt they worked better from say 5.25 onwards).
Former: Yeah its a bit Blasé (fun to program tho)
Later: I quite liked it in design. Might have lost some of the melody in the noise. Im less keen to change it unless future comments form a consensus. It did seem to bridge the sections when I was struggling to make it work.
Its appreciated.mattie wrote:All of this is of course my own opinion and you can take it or leave it as you see fit.

Re: Mission Creep - finished but still to mix
"modulated bass with the wide arp'd swing at the beginning of that section" yep this one.It could be just a case of automating the volume from 5.18 to 5.25 here. And when i mentioned do not use, it was only across this 7 second section in the track to see how it works.
Re: Mission Creep - finished but still to mix
Really nice feel to this track. But I think the bass feels a slight bit too distorted and some of the highs are a little lost, but I am listening on headphones. Very catchy melody! Has a nice mix of an 80's electro feel to it but bit of late 90's , too.

Part of me agrees so I should go with that. maybe the volume could do it but i think I just need to straighten up the notes somewhat.mattie wrote:"modulated bass with the wide arp'd swing at the beginning of that section" yep this one.It could be just a case of automating the volume from 5.18 to 5.25 here. And when i mentioned do not use, it was only across this 7 second section in the track to see how it works.

whats that, needs MORE distortion? will do!
Highs could be a bit lost. I will bring them out more in the mix down.

This crossed my mind too but i did not mention as i was not so sure if the swing was fully intentional.straighten up the notes somewhat

Re: Mission Creep - finished but still to mix
Huh? No I meant, it had come off sounding distorted on some elements that I don't think you would have used a distortion unit or saturator for. And those are probably a result of too many dynamics going on at the same time (over-compression, mainly) , or, if you're doing a lot of additive EQing, it could be that you're boosting the same frequencies (say, bass) way too much and as a result giving a bit of distortion. I will have to listen again, but hopefully you've gotten another mixdown done by that timeThanksSFBM wrote:Really nice feel to this track. Re: Mission Creep - finished but still to mix
Its got too much distortion
whats that? needs more distortion?
No - not more distortion!
Ok - adding more distortion.
yeah no sure. the deep sub has an ocilator at 0.5 which can sound pretty nasty. changing to 1 flattens it a bit. The difference seems is slight. Will give it a go on the main system when i do mix down. Should be able to bring up the highs.
defo got some of those compressors pumpin.
not doing much additive eq but been gung-ho with the freq's and rez so got some knarly spikes I will need to tame.
