Must be... as Mattias is THE biggest Hipster i know (though he's the coolest one)...

Yeah it is hipster'y looking alright, but I'm so sick of FB I'd kill for something new. Who knows how Ello will work out, could fall flat in a month. Its missing some major things atm, like the ability to post videos/players (though I guess that might be by design) kinda sucks for musicians though, as all links are external. Also don't see anyway to private message people, or set up groups etc. I guess some of that functionality may be paid for add ons, apparently thats their business model.

Boring boring boring internetz.. I couldn't give less than a shit atm. Have enough to do ignoring FB without getting mixed up in summation else. Will be interesting nonetheless to see where it goes.

I like the idea behind it but I've been reading about how there's a lot of people saying that their 'manifesto' won't survive longterm...
I like the clean style too.

Was never on facebook and never will be, but I'd actually consider this.
My biggest gripe with Fakebook and Google is how they have such a hard on to mine your real identity.

Yeah, it's insane. The amount of personal info they feel you should be willing to give them is bonkers. Still, I've managed to avoid most of that for some reason. I only set up my account for the blog as a lot of techno people seem to only communicate through it these days. Quite bizarrely, Pattern Burst seems to scan as a real name for Facebook. Suits me fine.

some people are attracted to ello over fb just for the fact that they don't sell your data and soul yet to those willing to shell $$ but I'll give them a year or two max before they get enough user base to cash-out and then everyone will start hating the evil corps. the circle never ends.

i'm just following techno people on there. cause i'm a fanboy 8B but what it really seems is like. it's the hot date chat line and all there is, is just guys wondering when the hot chat is going to start, "any cool chicks out there?"

not that i know anything about that sort of thing...

i'm not really giving ello much promise personally. most of the people that were hyped on it have abandoned it. it's not like soundcloud was when it was invite only. soundcloud had a great functionality and was idealist initially. the thing is that ello isn't unique. and fb is the mall of the internet. it offers something of everything that is has stolen from parts of the web. it's just the new aol. and reddit is the new usenet newsgroups.. thankfully nobody's managed to replicate the way forums like this one handle information. which is why i'm really thankful subsekt exists.

sorry if I sound sarcastic, but who the fuck even cares about another form of social media ?

I recently read an article that says people check their smartphone an average of 220 times a fucking day.
such a waste of time.

man I fear the day I'm getting a smartphone...

When me and my old man went looking for a TV, we had to search hard for a 'dumb' one that would still eat a USB stick and play commonly accepted movie formats. We found one though, god bless. Do you really need 5 different places to browse the web at in a house?
My phone is also 4 years old, but technically its one of the first 'smart' ones. What i use that the most for is to play music. I had a little facebook stint late last year where i'd check it almost daily but thats faded since then. Its mostly posturing and pointless inter-congratulatory non-information exchanges, and with that said i dont even have a ton of 'friends' its mostly people i actually know and care about it in several cases.

yeah I only want an iPhone to buy the mogees thing for fun (and sound recordings with contact mic), perhaps replace the GPS, add 3 or 4 apps and that's it.
but I fear I'll be checking my email too much.
Fuck FB checking, never used it much in the past, never will in the future. For me FB is nothing but a kind of short mailing tool
(plus the advantage you can find back people from the past)

Technology is a bitch sometimes. It moves too fast and wants you to update constantly.
I wanted to back up my Andromeda patches, and since I had some very bad experiences with backing up via MIDI to a computer, I'm using the card option.
Problem is the card runs on a battery, so some day your patches are gone when the battery is flat.
I have another card (came with another device), which is a PCMCIA card which is basically a CF to PC card adapter.
I tried that, it doesn't fucking work. My Andromeda won't accept it.
So I gotta buy a 2nd card basically if I want to be safe.
And here comes the hilarious part : those cards are PCMCIA type 1 SRAM cards.
Andromeda manual says it can only take 2MB max (which was probably the problem with the other card, of course it was 32MB (which is still nothing for today's standards)).

You know how much those 2MB cards cost ?
approx. 100€ !!!
Only place I found in Europe is thomann, asking 110€ I think (that's where I got my 1st card).
But if I check with US sites, they're also asking 100$ for the same card.

It's 2014 and you pay 100€ for 2 fucking megabytes !!
that pissed me off when I bought my 1st card a few years ago, and it still pisses me off today...

Cant say that comes as a surprise to me, but it sucks nonetheless. Backwards compatibility is a tough one when it comes to hardware. And then you end up paying the jackpot for something stupid like that. I dont have any hardware for music myself, but i did play around on this huge korg my old man bought in the early nineties, and i remember feeding it with 3,5 floppy disks and such, 2mb internal memory was a pretty big deal back then.

The broader issue though seems to be is how technology seems to force you to move along with it these days. While it would be a bit hypocritical for me to play the rebel act here and make it seem as if ive done everything i can to stay out of all this and get my life under control and in autonomy (because i certainly havent) i still dislike this slow yet unstoppable freight train fashion in which things are moving. The main problem being we simply dont get the time to evaluate the next invention/ gadget/ trick/ internet hype for its real worth before its already out there working everyone. And bam, there it is part of our lives without us having had a real chance to gauge its merits, long term effects and such. T-Mobile is currently advertising with the slogan 'Life is for sharing'. Does that include the NSA and secret services etc. worldwide of which it is now very well known that they love datamining social networks?

well, I still have 2 synths with floppy drives. But floppy disks are still ok to find,
and they don't cost an arm and a leg. in fact they're cheap as hell.
even the external floppy drive you hook up to your laptop via USB was still cheap.
