Reccomend me important techno tracks, artists & labels!!

Post by clarkFlavor »

Hi people!

I'm finally ready to seriously dwell into the delicious darkness that is techno music, and I need some guidance.
There is so much out there, and I don't want to miss out on the nastiest stuff!!

The techno I have so far truly listened to and loved are:
- Laurent Garnier "Man with the Red Face" (Album, back in the days)
- Adam Sellout "Bumload" (Podcasts, loving them)
- Mauro Picotto (various tracks & dj sets, this guy amazes me every time but I haven't heard any of his earlier stuff yet)

I love the minimal, dark, bouncy, hypnotic stuff - but open for everything, especially the absolute classics!
I also feel it's important to get familiar with Derrick May, Juan Atkins and Kevin Saunderson's work.

So, where does one begin?

Cheers!

Thanks man, will have a listen right away. I agree about beginning with the old school.
Makes listening to new music even more fun when you can spot the various influences!

How come all the Joey Beltram tracks starts with one bar, stops and goes back again?
Is that just a thing he liked to do or does it have any significance? Curious.

Adam-X and all his other aliases (ADMX-71, Traversable Wormhole).

Also if you enjoy watching documentaries there are quite a few about techno and it's origins. Lots of classics in there and you also see where it all came from. We have a thread about it somewhere here

This is a gargantuan task, "techno" has branched into many sub genres. To really find what you like I think it's worth going back to a genres roots, check out the early Detroit stuff, underground resistance etc. If I were to advise listening to an essential UR track it would be Hi Tech Jazz. Marvellous record and you should hear the obvious connection to The man with the red face.

From there try and selectively listen to some seminal records from where techno evolved into other styles. Check the early European stuff (R&S records etc), 2nd generation Detroit, the dub techno movement (basic channel) and even though it's a dirty word now the more recent wave of minimal techno etc etc. What I'm basically saying is by tracing history like this you'll gain a greater appreciation for the sound, an understanding of the ethos and discover some cracking music.

Or sack it all off and listen to some DnB.

Rather than recommend what/who I think is important I will recommend you stop listening to anything related to Bumload for a week. Thats my prescription. See how you feel and where your tastes are afterwards. A lot of that stuff is tiringly generic, uncreative and quite house tinged also in comparison to the vast majority of techno

Yes. it is...:D.For May, Pick up this album. It's just about as good a guide as you will get. For Atkins, Model 500 album Deep Space or or the Classics album are good starting points. Actually, Deep Space is one of the best techno albums ever so..

For Kevin Saunderson, My favourite stuff has always been his E-Dancer guise.

Then, of course, it all goes into overdrive. You lucky, lucky man. Underground Resistance, Jeff Mills, Rob Hood, Drexciya, Eddie Fowlkes and Blake Baxter too, but they really should be up there with the Original three as they were part of the same crowd and making some great music right from the beginning.

God, I'm jealous. So much stuff to hear for the first time.

And then, beyond Detroit, there is a whole world of mentalness.

Planar is right. Check out R&S. They were one of the best labels ever. So much brilliance on them. I also want to add Luke Slater to the mix. James Ruskin too.

Another Detroit guy to check out is Claude Young.

It would just be rude to not check out DJ Shufflemaster. 'Slip Inside You' is a glorious starting point :)
Thank you for the laughs, debate, new music found, production tips etc etc over the years. I wish Subsekt and everyone all the best for the future. Wiu.
