It's a shame it is a short interview but interesting to read that he has his doubts about the music he makes. And that he has not had formal training !!

Re: Interview with Hans Zimmer.
He's somewhat of a controversial figure in the music world.
Academia attacks him for being broad and obvious, and for using sub-writers to fill out his work. He also gets criticised because he doesn't make film scores, he makes film soundtracks (there is a distinct difference).
But then in popular terms he writes memorable music that people like.
To be honest, I never liked zimmers soundtracks, apart from Rain Man.
But then the inception soundtrack came along, which I love, and it has entered one of my fave soundtracks.

I should try making an epic track.
Or I could just stay to techno

Inception is really what introduced me to his music. Unreal power. There's loads of others I've heard bits of and I liked as well. Batman and dark knight are decent as well. Thin red line was also good.Lost to the Void wrote:He's somewhat of a controversial figure in the music world.

Re: Interview with Hans Zimmer.
Yeah the inception soundtrack really struck a chord with people.
I'm a huge fan of cliff Martinez, he scores as well as soundtracks. The soundtrack to Solaris (soderberg version) is marvellous, not many people saw the film so it didn't get that much exposure (it also means the soundtrack was limited pressing, it cost me 30 quid), but the soundtrack is beautiful, as has proved to be quite influential.

Re: Interview with Hans Zimmer.
my fav has always been Clint Mansell. The soundtracks to Pi and Requiem for a Dream are amazing
Re: Interview with Hans Zimmer.
Martinez made fuckin Springbreakers watchable. His score, 1 funny bit from Franco and some boobs.. all that was to it.
Really enjoy Zimmer compositions in Batman, Black Hawk Down and Inception. But there's just so much controversy around him.
He 'adopts' a lot of melodies from other composers. I think it's fine the way John Williams took part of a melody from
Kings Row for Star Wars. Zimmer took it a bit far at times. Check out the Kings Row music though, it'll throw you off a bit if you don't know it yet
If you want to get into film music in an arty way check out: Bernard Herrmann, Max Steiner, Erich Korngold, Phillip Glass and Danny Elfman. I'm writing a paper on the film industry's adoption of recorded sound, so that's why these names just fly out.
(Mansell is a good shout)

Elliot Goldenthall can do the business too. His Score for Alien 3 was groundbreaking at the time, and still incredibly powerful now.

soundtracks as in - he writes pieces and then someone picks which ones will go with which scenes? (that's my understanding of soundtracks)Lost to the Void wrote: Academia attacks him for being broad and obvious, and for using sub-writers to fill out his work. i like the score (or, soundtrack?) to "the ring" .
i've seen inception but i found it difficult to get past how much of a giant turd it is, so i can't remember any music from it.
edit: i've also heard that hans is a massive prick to people who work for him, not sure how true that is

Re: Interview with Hans Zimmer.
I like the fact that Hans uses Cubase...
I've always liked Danny Elfman's work. He's responsible for making a lot of the most memorable music from my childhood.
John Williams is another notable mention when it comes to film composers.

I've not heard of most of these people you all mention. You should be posted some YouTube links etc
Loving the fact that hans zimmer is against the grain as well. He sounds like a bit of a rebel in the "real music world"

Don't you mind the borrowing from other compositions though? I respect the man as well. He delivers epic and that's what a lot of these big movies call for.Mslwte wrote:I've not heard of most of these people you all mention. You should be posted some YouTube links etc

If anyone is he real rebel though, it's Bernard Herrmann. Going against the director to bring us the one sound that we affiliate with horror to this day (the high pitched violins). He really scores a film though, listening to just the music is not enough imo.
@Voidloss Yeah I know about Goldenthall. I was watching Heat yesterday actually (for like the 5th time).
I know the narrative by heart now, so the music stood out even more The roaring guitars are a bit cheesy now,
but I try to listen to it with 90s ears.

Re: Interview with Hans Zimmer.
yeah a score is written to the film, react it to it, a soundtrack is just music written that is then given to the director who cuts it to the film.ozias_leduc wrote:soundtracks as in - he writes pieces and then someone picks which ones will go with which scenes? No he really isn't a rebel at all.
There are some composers out there who are though, some genuinely groundbreaking guys.

Re: Interview with Hans Zimmer.
Ok, so some of my film score and soundtrack faves.
Agnus Dei - Elliot Goldenthall - Alien 3
I find it terrifying, and made at a time when mixing orchestra with electronics wasn't really done.
3:33 onwards is pure hell.
youtu.be/vQbd0t34WYY
The Chase - Elliot Goldenthall - Alien 3
The trumpets are so cool in this.
youtu.be/C3-uXPeiONY
Is that what everybody wants & First Sleep - Cliff Martinez - Solaris.
I just think it is beautiful, the entire soundtrack is a wonder, I`ve played it in the house, really loud many many times
Minimal but beautiful
youtu.be/Jintml12qaY
youtu.be/ICXinfdD0do
Proposition #1 - Nick Cave and Warren Ellis - The Proposition
Really Bleak, and beautiful, suited the film perfectly.
youtu.be/PX2oYPzr3jY
Fuck this shit and Hello Zepp - Charlie Clouser - Saw
Charlie did a great job on this soundtrack, he`s a wonderful sound designer (he was pretty much responsible for the NIN sound when NIN was good)
Very electronic. Regardless of what you think of the film, the soundtrack was pretty cool.
I closed a live PA with this once, people shit bricks.
youtu.be/ANIN6PNkwdI
youtu.be/S5NzpMYmfNQ
That`ll do for now, so many soundtracks and scores that I love, I could be here all day.
