Pro-Q 2

Fabfilter have finally let the cat out of the bag with their update to pro-q

youtu.be/GYTCQeggyzo

The spectral grab feature looks killer!

Hopefully it'll be reasonably priced for existing users.

I am super excited seeing as I use pro-q at the very least once per track :D

Good update, now Pro-Q is a fully fledged EQ. Finally.

Ripping off loads of features from DMG Audio Equilibrium aren`t they?

Still, almost makes it worth a purchase if I didn`t already have Equilibrium.

Equilibrium is a good EQ indeed, but I think it's a bit stretched to say they're ripping DMG. These days it's either emulating classic units or doing new stuff. So it was only natural to go in this direction sooner or later. Would love to see a plugin that would incorporate the modern surgical precision and versatility, with some analog style q's and filters. Basically, boost some frequency precisely, and add it some old school character :)

oh come on, they even lay the keyboard out like the DMG.

And Equilibrium has both analog style Q and filters and modern style precision. It is exactly what you describe. You can build your Eq to your desires with it.

Maybe, but if I were them it's what I'd do as well. If they didn't a lot of people would be moaning that it doesn't do something equilibrium does. It will be a lot easier to use, closer in functionality and hopefully cheaper at full price. They've got my money on Thursday unless it's got a monstrous price tag. The word seems to be 50-65% off for existing users depending on what you already own.

Anyway, that spectral grab

Yeah pretty obvious rip.
Either way I talked with Dave Gamble about the upcoming Equilibrium features. Hopefully he launches the new version soon. Auto-gain and all, will be sweet

What is the spectrum grab doing?
I`ve got spectrum mapping features on a few plugins, and I can`t work out what the spectrum grab on the Fabfilter is actually doing.
Is it just essentially providing an RMS EQ spectrum view that you can grab?

Yeah, that's pretty much it. Just grab a peak on the graph and pull it up/down. Its just a time-saver, albeit a clever one.

I've got this. Spent about 15 minutes with it so far and I think it's the shit. A big improvement. I can't believe how excited I am about a fucking EQ, jesus.

What's so special about it if i may ask? It's a EQ !!! in the end.

If the insistence is to be reductionist about it, what it offers that eq8 doesn't (as an example as that's my alternative):

Loads more filter slopes and can be applied to any filter type
EQ matching
Side chain for the spectrum analyser (which is much improved itself)
Snap bands to musical notes
24 bands
Tilt EQ
Gain and Q linking
Auto gain
Natural phase mode

I've left out the eye candy changes, the fact it uses less CPU than pro-q 1 and spectral grab (it's a timesaver is all). The biggest deal is probably natural phase mode, it changes bass with no colouring (phase distortion?) I could perceive while I was testing it, you just get the expected EQ change. There'll be some downside to that mode, but if it does bass better it's already paid for itself for me.

Yes, it's just an EQ, but a really nice one.

Thanks Planar. Will have closer look at it. EQ8 is my go-to EQ and i don't have any thing to complain about it. but i really like FabFilter plugs. Used the first version of Pro-Q from time to time but realized that i recently just use EQ8 for everything.

EQ8 has adaptive Q which is essentially the same thing I believe, following what some analogue EQ`s do

So it does, Steve. I've never noticed it before, but then again I don't use EQ8 at all now.

With the first version of pro-q you weren't missing much feature wise compared to pro-q, probably the 6db slope option and the different phase modes. It's much more pleasurable to use imo, but some parts of EQ8's interface are really annoying to me.
