obscure question- where did this old rave sound come from?

Post by ozias_leduc »

always been curious. today i'm bored at work and i've started obsessing over it.

does anyone know where the sound at 2:26 originated from? it's been in many tracks.

youtu.be/TKXYgz-lGbE

wondering what old synth would have spat this out, because i can't imagine it ever coming from something i've played with. certainly ain't a juno sound.

Actually it is a Juno sound. :D

Its a hoover patch. Alpha Juno-1 or Mks-50.

Over here they think its a cut sample from some classical music, Carmina Burana probably:

and that sounds about right to me.

It was the first release using the begining of "Staaaatu Variabilis" as a stab.
Nice SH 101 bleeps, groovy breakbeats, strengthened by a TR 808 drum kit, hypnotics synth pads, very nice ingredients.
The intro is amazing and gives goose bump.
This sound was used all over 1991 and 1992 just like the hoover sound of "Mentasm"... over and over,
remove these 2 sounds and only half of the "Hardcore-Techno" music of that era might have been put out....

you really thought that sampled sound was a hoover ?
(I presume that's the one Oziac is talking about, the main lead in the track)
you can clearly hear the bad pitching up and down of old samplers.

you need to get your ears waxed, I know a good place up in Vegas with great flutes and harp music !

That's the old car horn sample that was on the mc303 and orbit 9090. Probably other roland gear as well

Weirdly enough I`ve just finished an extended EP of old skool influenced stuff.
I had to track down loads of original sample sources for it, original breaks ie The Winstons and so on
And sample stabs and what not.
Made my own hoovers.
The only thing I didn`t use was the Carmina Burana sample.
Damnit.

I played with the original amen break a few months back. I made quite a respectable drum and bass loop with. I know it's been done a million times but it was fun going through the process nonetheless.

I only found out that it was the amen break sample used in hardcore tracks when I started producing. I remember trying to programme hits to recreate that loop and failing massively.

Yeah.. Forgot to say actually.. Which was the original point of me replying.. But I tried programming amen break stuff too back in the day. Hitting a brick wall & wondering why? Sometimes there are times when you just NEED to get that particular sound.
