There are a lot of great filters in vst land.

For an actual filterbank
http://www.audiodamage.com/effects/prod ... ?pid=AD029

Just general mad filtering
http://www.u-he.com/cms/filterscape

Also the Runciter from the Uhbik bundle can get very rawkus
http://www.u-he.com/cms/uhbik

FXPansion Etch for more realistic analogue style purity and dirt
http://www.fxpansion.com/index.php?page=172

Soundtoys is amazing, very "real" comes with all your lfo`s,envelopes, input saturation etc
http://www.soundtoys.com/product/FilterFreak

From ultra smooth to screaming death using a new type of resonance
https://www.sonalksis.com/creative_filter.htm

Something there should cover your needs.

I love the Soundtoys Filter, they are just spot on with all their plugs

If you want to do creative things with a filter you can also consider to use the ableton stock filter and use its sidechain channel with random percussion loops (I think quantize courses has a free tutorial about this). I already posted it in the free plugs thread but in case you did not saw it, there is a nice little free filter plugin called "atom" by sinevibes. peace

I love cytomic's "The Drop". Great to get movement into loops using the env follower: http://www.cytomic.com/drop

Yeah, really like the Fabfilter one. Their UIs are awesome too. Picked up all the effect ones (not the mastering stuff) in the sale and really pleased with it, the distortion is fantastic.

I've not checked that yet. Considering the glue compressor is one of the best (most hardware like anyway) software compressors there is, I'll be very interested to hear this. Their coding is awesome.

I'll go against the grain here and say I hate most plugin filters. They all sound weak to me. If you can't afford a Sherman get a Jomox T-Resonator its wicked and perfect for techno.

I've got a wonderful clacktronics wasp drive tabletop multimode filter here.
Hard to find now but worth getting if you see one.

But yeah, I think we've mostly covered all the good soft filters,

Ohmforce ohmygod! Is worth checking out. The comb filter is very "real" combined with the overdrive feature you can get it to feedback in very very realistic ways. It goes very wild. It's the closest thing I have found to realistic feedback in software.

I<ll look into the ohmforce. I'v played electric guitar with tube amps and hardware distortion for a very very long time and while the software for distortion is bad it's not quite the same thing as the real thing. Not that the software is inferior ; it's just different.

I'v been struggling to get decent feedback as well.

You can create feedback loops with software. But it just doesn't work the same.

Feedback with a guitar is easy, you just need a bit of volume, find the sweet spots, distortion, maybe a sustainer or comp in the chain.

I'm torn wether or not to buy an ebow for my guitar or go with a violin bow.

Make yourself a little 4x4 matrix mixer, you can generate mad feedback with em.

I'd say both, ebow is better for sustaining long single notes, bow is better for chords and accidentals, but much harder to generate sustain. Violin bows are the longest so the create the best sustain, but cello bows are also pretty interesting as you can get more force out of them (especially if you prefer thicker guitar strings).
Cue 3 2013 - Devil's Advocate.
