I've always fancied picking up a Neptune 2. Image

They were just over £300 when they came out but seem to have gone under the radar a bit. Could be a little known hidden gem! No idea what they'd go for 2nd hand. A curve ball there anyway...

I have a couple of yamaha FM synths & a DSI mono Evolver.

The Evolver is great - has lots of mods & you can do a bit of tuning on the OSC's to beef things up. Its got 4 step sequencers in it too which you can assign to mod stuff as well as run a sequence. It sounds great. I've got great sounds from it - deep, nasty, soft and spacy from it - but tbh, I've yet to use anything from it. I just seem to be quicker, FAR quicker opening up a soft synth. Dunno, guess theres too much fun noodling.

I had a Roland JP8080 for a while also. I really liked it cos it was exactly like sylenth in terms of the layout / OSC's on different 'pages'. Only thing was that it sounded a bit tinny. In hindsight, there was a fair bit I could have done to fix that after. Filter was very clean sounding, though some of the best sound design I've heard in any presets ever were in that thing. Even though they weren't my cup of tea, the drone-y / ambient stuff - fucking awesome.

Another one I look out for is the Yamaha AN200. They're pretty cheap & seem fucking cool. A year or 2 ago I saw 5 for sale on Ebay, boxed & unopened - new old stock for around 300ish. Regret not buying one.

I'm interested to see where that Roland System 1 synth goes.

I think I heard that it'll be getting more synth sounds added to it over time. I've tuned out of the Aira stuff tbh so dont know what the vibe is for the System 1 - but the TR8 is getting great love.

Rumour has it that the tr8 has the possibility to have new sounds added at a later date. Genius :D

I would go for one of the brutes. It has an unique character to it, like the machinedrum.

But if i'd have more to spend I'd look at some moogs, nordlead thingies and the korg ms20.

If you want a bit of an all rounder the blofeld is a good bet. It has lots of sound possibilities. It can be nasty or beautiful, how ever you chose. It's relatively inexpensive and you can do more tweaking via the vst editors that are available.

It's hard to describe, but to my ears it just has a really nice kind of smooth sound to it. Not to say it can't make a hell of a racket too! As soon as I saw it on ebay about a year ago, I snapped it up.

Yeah I've heard this rumour mentioned too. Hopefully it's true. A nice set of 606/707/727 sounds would be awesome. Hell you could have 2 TR8's side by side and have the different sounds in each.

There is a huge amount of selection of synths mono or polys under the 1K mark both new and used. Not so many new polys but still. Lots of stuff has been mentioned but I'll throw in a couple that haven't been mentioned.

Moog Slim Phatty, Pittsburg modular system 10, Studio Electronics BoomStar, (4 different flavours of filters to choose from: Arp 2600, CS80,Tb-303 & Oberheim SEM), Doepfer DarkEnergy 2.

Cheers for all the ideas guys.
Really feel sold on the minibrute though, anytime Im looking at videos the minibrute has a sound I much prefer, even from being a synth noob this has a appealing sound to me which seem unique.

Please keep bashing ideas in this thread because Im loving it, and i've a feeling in later years Ill wanna buy more synths, so all these ideas are great.

Can I programme a step sequencer into the mini brute? Like midi cable from my audio 10 to mini brute or something like that?

Cheers again guys

Yeah midi or gate trigger would work with the MiniBrute. There is a thread here about how to do it. I think TdMusic posted the solution after I suggested he try the gate instead of midi when he was having problems with midi sync.

If you really want ideas. I say buy a sampler not a synth. The reason is because a sampler is any sound and every sound. You can do synths, drum machines and samples all from the same box. Most samplers contain an architecture that is very similar to synths. Filter, envelope, amp, LFO.

As an example. Emu was a company that started out building modular synths. Their samplers like the E6400 are some very complex and deep machines. Its basically like having a modular synth that is polyphonic. Now I am not suggesting that you buy a E6400. I think a better idea would be to buy an Mpc 500. You get a sequencer and a sampler. Now you have a machine that is your centre piece. You can do drums, synths and samples and sequence it all from one box. You can make a whole track with it. You can then add a synth to it and sequence those too. It fits your budget.

I always think if someone wants ideas for a monosynth ( analogue? ) they should think about a Roland SH-101. Maybe I just like them, which seems ironic just now because I don't have one ( I had to force a quick £425 sale for auto repairs ) but I really rate the 101's, so much more to them than just solid bass. And also, if you have a multi out sound card, you don't need midi retro fits, I was clocking the 101's sequencer on a spare output from my Machinedrum ( using an edited rimshot ) and my 101 sequences were tight as fuck! Anyway, it's above your budget and I dunno if it's even been mentioned but as far as I am concerned, have one at some point :)
