There is quite a few of these types of stories being spoken about. He was a top bloke by all accounts.[wesellboxes] wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 6:55 amThere's a ton of anecdotes on FB now about times he played small gigs for no money and stayed the weekend, did remixes for very little so the artist would get exposure, gave loads of people free studio time and so on.
My favourite is from the 90's and when a now UK techno producer, then a sweaty pilled up teenager, crashed into the decks and brought Sabresonic to a standstill, I think it might of even been H awtin playing at the time. Weatherall grabbed him by the scruff of the neck and marched him through crowd and down the stairs, while all the time this guy apologising profusely and thinking he was on for a kicking. When he finally got to the bottom of the stairs and on the street Weatherall, who'd said nothing up until now, just laughed and said "Don't be sorry, if you can make it back up these stairs I'll let you back in, otherwise get one of these taxis and get home safely"

Excellent write up by JD Twitch from Pure on RA.

Didn't fully realise all the connections.. used to go to a club in Dublin where Brainstorm & Twitch would play. Good times.

Yeah, but when time's up, it's up.
Maybe this may come across as being crass or insensitive, which I don't mean it to be at all, but in nearly every photo of him used in the media recently shows him enjoying a cigarette.
So from the statistical standpoint of being a smoker, 56 isn't as young as you'd imagine.
Doesn't take away from the fact that he was ridiculously influential and will be missed by many.
Re: Andy Weatherall Has Died _ RIP
Aye.. he loved a good fucking smoke by the looks of it. I unfortunately noticed that too.
Ive been reading stuff about him since the early 90s and recall even back then an article commenting on his studio/ space being covered in a layer of fag ash. It's one of those details my young brain retained about him. This was probably somewhere between 90-94.

AW's nom-de-plume Primal Scream gig review for NME.. the collaboration began after this:

Funny watching these interviews over the last few days.. this review is certainly written in his voice.

A colleague of mine remembers going to a warehouse party feat Mr. Weatherall in Leeds in 88
19FUCKING88. That's a lot of gigs, parties, and smokey basements ago.
32 years of dingy nightclubs, when nearly all the other guys from that era and level of fame went to the stadium superstar route (Carl Cox, Pete Tong, Oakenfold etc..) That's dedication.

.. and they were indeed dark & Smokey.
Glad I never worked behind a bar. We went to London for a weekend, a year or 2 after the smoking ban had been in effect here in Ireland. You could still smoke in UK pubs. We went to Fabric. Totally forgot what it was like being in that smoke filled environment. Washed my face before going to bed & the water was black. Woke up the next morning and whilst still in bed I could smell the clothes I had worn the night before from their pile. I was a light, social smoker at the time .. but it was a real wake-up call for me tbh.
Yeah.. It's a long time to be at the coalface. A v.tough life to chose for the body.
Another article (The tone is strange in places..) with some interesting details from The Telegraph.

He ripped off another track for that, although did credit the artist I think on some pressings, at best you can say they reimaged it, the David Holmes mix was the one though, had the breakdown as my wake up alarm on my phone for must be 15 years.Mslwte wrote: ↑Tue Feb 18, 2020 9:14 amHe certainly did and made beautiful music as well.

Re: Andy Weatherall Has Died _ RIP
that AW nme review captures everything that was great & crap about the nme at that time. most interviews/reviews being as much about the writer than the band... which was sortof ok when the writers were gas & the bands were shite.
primal scream played dublin that same month... gillespie hilariously puking up on stage & various members storming off throughout the gig.

Re: Andy Weatherall Has Died _ RIP
Yeah he was a heavy smoker, both cigarettes and he smoked weed nearly every day too. It's going to catch up at some point.
Smokebelch was indeed lifted from LB Bad. Glider borrows heavily from Westbam's Alarm Clock and the drums from Loaded are straight from a Soul II Soul remix. It was the early 90's, he himself has always said he had no idea what he was doing - "the confidence of ignorance" - and post Public Enemy and De La Soul, sampling without clearance or getting musicians to recreate riffs en masse was the norm. They gave Lamont Booker a credit once it blew up but apparently that wasn't enough and he apparently turned up at the Sabres offices one time intent on fisticuffs. They weren't in.

Btw all they Nu-Groove, Traxx, Dance Mania pre-88 cats got ripped off horrendously with bad deals and payments that were never made. You'd think he'd move on rather than play it out online for 20 odd years after the event.
