Soundcloud is dying...If it doesn't die, it's basically dead to me. What do you plan on doing? I'm gonna keep stuff up there as long as I can, and I'm really glad Bandcamp is around.
If you're on BC, stick a link to your store here.
What do you guys plan to do to get your music out?

People have been saying Soundcloud is going to die for years. It's not going to die any time soon. It's the Youtube situation all over again. People have been saying Youtube is going to die forever aswell but it's not going to because hosting videos/audios/images online as a business sucks. There's no way to feasible replace YT/SC with "better versions" at the same scale because the hosting consumes metric tons of traffic and is hard to monitize. The reason why Soundcloud sucks is because the bigger they get, the more they have to cut corners. As soon as Mixcloud and Hearthis.at get big, the majors are going to come knocking, the traffic is going to explode and it's going to be SC all over again (not that Soundcloud hasn't made some seriously dumb decisions over the years) with dumb copyright rules and shit bitrates.

Re: So with the eminent demise of Soundcloud, what's your pl
Soundcloud wont die - they have too many daily and overall users - they might get snatched up by someone in the digital/audio/streaming sector for a rock bottom price at some point, but they won't die.
Soundcloud might suffer if a competing product were to rise in popularity, but they would have the same issues as SC has in terms of hosting costs so they'd have to invent a revolutionary new hosting/streaming technology (Anyone seen Silicon Valley?) in order to have a unique product and thus source investment.
Ironically, conceptually their product is in kind of a safe space, as they have no real competitors. Bandcamp, Mixcloud etc service slightly different markets.
They know this and so do investors - which is why they havn't sold yet (investors hoping for a return still) and keep managing to secure further investment (people want a cut if/when it does happen)

How can it be a phising post if there is no link to try to phis your details? Unless mods removed it already.
It could be classed as astroturfing, but so far you're the only one who has mentioned AudioMist... so maybe you're the shill...

I just don't understand why they don't go with a straight sales option? Make a service fee? They just keep going more and more towards the majors and shitting on the communities that made the platform viable in the first place.

Soundcloud is great as my one-stop radio station.
Bandcamp sucks ass for discovering stuff you may like.

Because they've run the maths and there is (potentially) more money to be hand in harvesting peoples emails and details en-masse than there is creating a closed premium service.
Remember, if something is free, then you're the product being sold.
I know people who aren't even musicians who have SC accounts just to like/repost stuff. Having all their data as well as music creators data is worth an absolute fortune.
Now theres a big potentially up there that I bolded. At the moment they havn't figured out how to leverage this user data into cash, but if they do - big big money. Many times more money than just creating a premium service would have ever netted them.
Re: So with the eminent demise of Soundcloud, what's your pl
I'd say personalised advertising... They recommend you shit based on the stuff you listened to, isn't it?! FB and Instagram does it all the time... Just read up in the other thread about the lack of quality. I experienced that just yesterday when I uploaded a second version of a track where I did not touch the low end in any way and the result after the upload is fucking horrible... I personally have no experience with other platforms than SC though...Plyphon wrote:nomadjames wrote:

It wouldn't take much for Bandcamp to become search-friendly, with genre tags and shit. It's kinda good that it's not like that as it means you only go there for something specific ..Mslwte wrote:Bandcamp is like an oldskool record shop in that respect.jordanneke wrote:Soundcloud is great as my one-stop radio station.

Re: So with the eminent demise of Soundcloud, what's your pl
it's not dying as you say. a bit of an overreaction.
But just in case, my plan is to wait for someone else to make a free site and then just go and use that. You know, like everyone in this lazy world does. Then when that free service goes, i'll just complain and wait for the next one to pop up. easy.

my label page's traffic has doubled over the last 6 months
I don't think it is dying at all, if anything it seems to still be growing
