ableton compressor sidechain - is there a way to change the

Post by yentz »

Hi,
does anyone know how the attack and release times in abletons standard compressor are working? are they linear? in case there is just one very short hit? how does the volume fade back in? if there is no signal triggereing the compressor does it raise the gain linear or what? is there any way to change the curve?

The Knee control adjusts how gradually or abruptly compression occurs as the threshold is approached. With a setting of 0 dB, no compression is applied to signals below the threshold, and full compression is applied to any signal at or above the threshold. With very high ratios, this so-called ”hard knee” behavior can sound harsh. With higher (or ”soft”) knee values, the compressor begins compressing gradually as the threshold is approached. For example, with a 10 dB knee and a -20 dB threshold, subtle compression will begin at -30 dB and increase so that signals at -10 dB will be fully compressed.

Yeah, the knee doesn't control the attack curve though.
The knee is merely when compression begins to act in relation to the threshold, the attack and release still control the rate at which the compression approaches full gain reduction.

Abe's compressor doesn't feel completely linear, but it doesn't feel super musical either, it's somewhere in the middle ground.

https://www.ableton.com/en/manual/live- ... compressor

It has a switch between logarithmic and linear, and it loads as logarithmic by default.

This is also interesting:
