Netflix tips

Post by Hades »

After 21 years of not having cable tv,
I had to look for a new internet provider when my old one got taken over by some other company,
and found out it was fucking cheaper taking a package with cable tv included than just internet/phone by itself.

Anyway... I was smart enough to get myself Netflix, and hell...
I don't think I switched on normal tv for maybe 3x in the past few months...
Even my kids never turn on normal tv, they just always watch Netflix instead.

So, since there's a lot on offer, and our time is limited,
how about recommending some Netflix stuff ?

My biggest discovery, without a single doubt, was "Trailer Park Boys".
I can't believe how I never even heard about this series before.
A google taught me it's still going on today, but the quality has obviously gone down through the years,
so I wouldn't recommend the extra films (I watched parts of one of them, it was pretty disappointing)
But I'm still just at season 5 at the moment, and I haven't seen a single episode which was disappointing.

What can I say ? Life in a trailer park.
Main characters are Julian, who looks like a slightly overweighted slick Canadian version of an 80's Italian macho, and is constantly holding a rum/coke glass in his hand wherever he goes, and Ricky, who can't say a single sentence without swearing, and is dumb as fuck and is always having a smoke everywhere possible.
Bubbles is the 3rd main character, some goofy, slightly retarded guy with huge glasses, but he's not half as funny as Ricky and Julian.

Then there's the wonderful extra characters, like Mr. Lahey, who's the trailer park supervisor, but who's always drunk, and his lover, Randy, who is always without a shirt, unless forced to wear one, the "assistant weekend trailer park supervisor", or J-Roc, a white guy who thinks he's black and says "know what I'm sayin'?" every 5 seconds, and the many, many others who make this show so great.

I haven't laughed this hard since I saw the Fast Show for the 1st time...
These guys make the people in Mad Max look like they won a nobel prize for quantum physics and fashion design... And the car Ricky lives in must be the shabbiest vehicle I ever saw still able to drive around.

They deal with squirrels eating their weed plants (what else do you have guns for!), a mountain lion eating the hamburgers which Randy just stuffed a viagra pill in, make a driveway from the huge pile of hash they just stole,... or simple hilarious shit like Ricky and his 8 year old daughter, trying to cut smoking at the same time.

All done in some mockumentary style... (some times a person from the camera crew gets shot as well)
You can tell it was made pretty low budget, but the people behind this must have had so much fun making this... In fact, according to wiki, the main actors later on bought the rights to the series after they stopped the original seasons, just to be able to continue with the show. I guess that says a lot about the fun they have playing these white trash cunts. :D

It's the salt of the earth guys (and wimmin S.),
but not as we usually know it...
In flemish we would say "marginal white trash", but mostly "marginal" all the way...
Highly recommended.

Only thing that bugs me about Netflix is that the film choice is very limited to my taste.
Admittedly, in the last decade or so, I have seen far too many films than the average person,
but I also suspect the film offer is far bigger in other countries than it is here in Belgium.

ow, and I love how in Trailer Park Boys, they never stop being creative in finding new ways to use ice hockey sticks.
It's like the ultimate salute to their Canadian heritage...

Wow, late to the party ey?
TPB gets steadily worse from season 4. There were all sorts of problems that caused this with the producers, script, actors. The very latest season is a little better, but it`s probably time they stopped it all.
By the later seasons Bubbles (who was initially my fave character) has changed completely from what made him so interesting, as the script moved away from what made the series great.

Lahey holds it all together, a fabulous character played by a great actor. His shitisms are as epic as the rickyisms.

I actually quite liked the Swearnet film, though it isn`t a TPB film, it is about the actors.

The same guys also did The Drunk and On Drugs Happy Funtime Hour, which is a fucking bizarre series.

Stranger Things is very good, intense series from netflix.
If you can swallow the 80s american teens cliches it unfolds quite amazing story.
And kids play dungeons and dragons there (nostalgia is real) :D

Stranger things is great.

The Expanse is really really good. Probably the best Sci Fi for a long time, it`s serious in the way that BattleStar Galactica (the reboot) was, but just generally better.

The Bridge is a really good Nordic Noir about the pairing between a Danish cop with a troubled past and a Swedish detective with high functioning autism/aspergers, in a cross border case. Very well written and acted.

Lilyhammer - Silvio from The Sopranos does a sort of witness protection move to Lillehammer in Norway. It`s just hilarious.

Archer - Utter greatness, worlds best/worst secret agent and alcoholic.

I don`t feel at home in this world any more: Film. Dark dark dark humour.

Sharkwater - Amazing documentary about the shark apocalypse we are causing. The environment is fucked, say by e bye to your childrens future.

Suburra: Film. Really stunningly shot film about corruption in Rome. It presents Rome in a way, visually, never before shown. Deep plot, great acting, amazing soundtrack and just wonderful cinematography.

Bone Tomahawk: Film. Darkest most fucked up western ever made. Kurt Russel is in it.

Deep: Film. Beautiful film about a cop trying to solve a case before a deadly disease kills him.

The Deep: Film. True story about a guy who survived for a crazy amount of time in icelandic waters after his fishing boat sank.

What we do in the shadows: Best film about vampires (and werewolves) ever. "What are we? We`re Werewolves, not Swearwolves, now come on".

Fullmetal Alchemist Brotherhood: Epic Anime series, surprisingly dark.

Calvary: Film. Brendan Gleeson is amazing as a priest who is told he will be killed for being a good man... It`s so good.

The eternal zero: A brother and sister investigate their grandfathers death as a ww2 kamikaze pilot

Kill La Kill: Insanely insane Anime series that bends the typical schoolkid trope.

Green Room: Unexpected gritty horror about skinhead nazi punks.

Entertainment: Directed by the same guy who made the utter genius dark dark comedy "The Comedy", this time starring Gregg Turkington (Neil Hamburger), another pitch black film about life on the road for a comedian. But it`s about so much more. The utter despair and numbness of being when you lose taste for life. Really good.

The Young Offenders: Irish teen reprobates go on a funny adventure. A really great twist on a road comedy.

Victoria: A film about one chance meeting in Berlin that turns into a nightmare evening. Famed for being shot in 1 take, in real time. Quite amazing.

Narcos: Series about the bringing down of 2 of the most famed Cartels in south america. Really really good.

That`s some of my 5 star list.

I'd add BoJack Horseman and Flaked (maybe I'm a Will Arnett fanboy) to the list. Bear in mind most of the Netflix original movies suck ass.

Narcos - All good but series 3 is fantastic

Breaking Bad if you truly have been under a rock, Better Call Saul if you haven't

Betting On Zero - Documentary about hedgefund investor shorting a pyramid selling scheme and the poor Latinos caught up in it

Requiem for the American Dream - Noam Chomsky in explaining where it's all gone wrong

Hunt for the Wilderpeople - Quirky comedy drama about a care home runaway in the New Zealand bush

Cocaine Cowboys - Documentary about the white stuff in Miami in the 80's

Tickled - bizarre, amusing and ultimately quite sad

Black Mirror - Series 3 and Charlie Brooker making a good thing better with a bigger budget

Ozark - Not as good as the others on this list but still a quality series that gets quite tense at the end

Hip-Hop Evolution - Great documentary series that takes you right back, speaks to everyone and unearths some new facts and footage

Bone Tomahawk and Green Room are fantastic, it's not on Netflix, but there is a great indie horror film called Red, White and Blue that I really recommend if you get the chance. On the other end of the spectrum I've been way late getting onto Arrested Development, but I'm hooked now, and as Steve says, What we do in the shadows is genius.

I tried The Expanse but stopped after 2 episodes. Just couldnt really get into it. Is that one of those shows where you have to watch more to really enjoy it?

It takes a while for all the threads to come together but it's worth persistence.
Series 1 sets all then players up.
Series 2 kicks off at a fair old rate and gets more and more intense. But all the players and the politics need to be set up for it all to make sense.
1st season gets more lively in the second half, well worth persisting with, it really is the best sci fi made for a very long time.

Stranger things season 2 starts later this month, excited for that!

My mate said they've made an 8bit style game for iphone/android where you collect VHS and at the end unlock an exclusive trailer. Very nice promo fitting with the aesthetics of the show.

I'm watching through Power on Netflix atm, not something I'd usually go for but have been really enjoying it so far, some of it's a bit cheesy and whatever but it's good fun. Covers a big NY drug distro. Probably not for everyone but has it's moments.

I've been too scared to watch the Expanse. I read the first book and it was pretty shithouse.

The Netflix movie "First They Killed My Father" is really good. Glad they made a movie of it (it's a very powerful book). It's about the Khmer Rouge's bastardry in Cambodia in the 70s.

Actually, I gotta say, I'm somewhere in season 6 right now,
and I'm still laughing my ass off.
It is slowly dwindling down a bit, but I'm really amazed at how they always invent new schemes again,
and some jokes just never grow old, like how Ricky always stops his car by driving into something.

And you are totally right, mr Lahey is pure gold.
The way he can play a totally drunk guy, then a sober guy, and then a sober guy that plays a drunk guy to trick Ricky & Julian, fucking priceless...

I have to say it's amazing to see how "physical" these actors get all the time.
I mean, how many times are they not wrestling with each other and end up falling on the floor ?
Same for mr Lahey falling constantly, bumping into things, throwing piss jugs, whatever.
They must have had so much fun doing that shit.

I never liked Bubbles that much, tbh.
I just think his character is too much exaggerated, but in a way I can't properly believe in him, and he does change too much. Is it the swear net film where they travel around EU ? I watched parts of that, and the Bubbles in there is totally different than the Bubbles in the trailer park, and even in the trailer park he was already changing from who he used to be originally.

I loved Narcos, all seasons, but you're right that series 3 is most likely the best.
Better call Saul is a lot better than I expected it to be. Just started watching series 3.

Still need to watch Hip-Hop Evolution.
I watch quite a lot of documentaries because it's a thing I couldn't watch a lot when I didn't have cable,
but I gotta say some of these Netflix documentaries are just boring shit. Like they took some semi-interesting story and then gave someone enough budget to turn it from something that must have been worth 30 minutes at least into more than 1,5 hours documentary with mostly talking heads and/or stupid re-enactments...

I loved Bojack Horseman fore the first 2 seasons.
Absolutely loved it.
All the little details that are constantly hidden in the background,
all the animal jokes.

But when I started watching Trailer Park Boys I haven't turned on Bojack Horseman again,
also because I think it's not as good as it once was.
