Cool sites for nature field recordings?
Cool sites for nature field recordings?
I'm trying to incorporate some more field recordings in my tracks that I can process. Of course, I could record my own but recordings from across the street seem a bit boring to me and living in a big city, recordings tend to have an urban feel, which isn't really what I want. I'm looking for some nature recordings of exotic/far-away places that have a bit of fantasy element, I don't know, Iceland or some shit. I've been googling around a bit but the whole field recordings scene seems a bit obscurant. Is there is a site where I can get packs of field recordings from cool locations? I know of sites like Freesound, but they're a pain to browse I'm way too lazy to search and download a bunch of sounds individually. Something that's already sorted by a consistent theme and geographic location would be neat.

Freesound is amazing, and many sounds are in packs you can download.
Not hard to surf either with keywords and tags.
If you are too lazy even for that, you might as well just give up.

I didn't know there are packs! I'm usually quite obsessive about everything I do but i'm not entirely sure about the field recording thing yet so searching and downloading hundreds of individual sounds seems like a bit too much time spent.
Still, it would be cool to know if there are other sites for this kind of stuff. Freesound obviously is a great resource but on the flipside it's also not curated which means it can get overwhelming and sounds may not be geographically and thematically coherent.

When you click on a sound you like the download page will have keywords and tags and it will also tell you if it is part of a pack.
In the main sounds section there are links you can click browse tags, browse pack etc
https://freesound.org/browse/packs/
If you search using tags you can honestly down in exactly what you want.
I might also suggest Framework Radio, a weekly radio broadcast and podcast that broadcasts only field recordings of the highest quality.
But.
That would mean going back through the archive and downloading shows and then skimming through the shows in a sample editor and snipping out what you want.
Only someone really demented would do something like that, it's almost like sample hunting and carefully curating your own sample collection.

There is nothing more better than using your own field recs though.

You nail it. Why should I even think of being passionate about my very own samplelibrary, when I can buy cool Ableton Live Packs, where someone else does the job for me. One must be really retarded not to take advantage of the option to buy everything.

On the more premium end... Hollywood edge and sound ideas are what we use in the post production world, often combining layers of atoms Fx to build up a denser soundscape

Nice one Void, my GF was looking for something like that, as she's working on some abstract music piece for someone's photo presentation.Lost to the Void wrote:Worth playing around with generative software too

Re: Cool sites for nature field recordings?
I probably should have mentioned that I'm way too obsessive-compulsive with digital files to maintain a real sample library (hence why I almost never sample except for some drum machine samples) ... that it's why I said 'lazy', anything evolving some kind of file management is going to be a major blackhole of time for me... it's bad enough with all the stuff I already have on my computer. With thousands of samples to manage, I would never get any music done. Just the idea of a folder with hundreds of random, untagged, unsorted samples gives me anxiety That's why I was interested in something that's already curated, so I don't lose my damn mind. Aren't there a lot of field recording labels putting out albums? I remember coming across a bunch but forget all of them and I'm not familiar with that scene at all.
That software looks cool, will check it out.

No, that's not the issue, I've recorded my own before, it's fun but then that sample/that track is always bound geographically to that location.. and a neighbourhood park isn't very exciting.. if that makes any sense? It's got nothing to do with the properties of the actual sound, it's purely psychological.Alume wrote:There is nothing more better than using your own field recs though.

Re: Cool sites for nature field recordings?
Interesting topic, I'm currently working on my textures as well, I managed to do some good stuff but limited with youtube! U can find good stuff there if u use good keywords and some time! Also SampleSwap has a good library try it here maybe! Good luck!
Thanks mate!! This will work like a charm for what I'm looking for atmLost to the Void wrote:Worth playing around with generative software too

This might be of interest. Also there is a download link somewhere in there for the Ableton Live Projects. Enjoy....
