New roland synth.. SE-02

Post by Thies »

Just stumbled over the youtube demo from the new roland-se02

her it is in case anyone is interested

youtu.be/oCGsMjx1inM

Judging from that demo.. it sounds not really appealing (to me at least). The sound feels a bit "dated" to me. Well maybe its just a bad demo.

Specs taken from their homepage:

Discrete analog circuitry with knob-per-function interface
Three voltage controlled oscillators with six waveforms
Temperature-stabilized oscillators with automatic tuning
24 dB low-pass filter and dual gain-stage amplifier
Three types of cross modulation (XMOD), feedback loop, and noise generator
Tempo-syncing LFO with nine waveforms
Tempo-syncing digital delay with bypass to maintain analog signal path
Save and recall sounds with 384 preset and 128 user locations
Musical and intuitive pattern sequencer with song mode
Sequence notes, gate time, glide, and synth parameters
CV, VCF CV and gate inputs, plus trigger in/out
External Input for routing audio through the SE-02’s filter section
Standard MIDI, USB-MIDI, and USB-Audio
Create a polyphonic synth by using Chain Mode to connect two or more SE-02s together via MIDI

Glad they are doing an analog again, but I'll wait for a poly. This is a big boring to me.

Of course if the price is right I might be tempted.

Judging from the specs alone it seems to be quite nice.

Though nothing new, get a bit of a mother32+Erebus vibe out of it. With some more bells and whistels.

I think this is meant to compete with the Behringer Minimoog clone

It's boutique size... :( .
It looks like the Roland answer to the Behringer Minimoog clone (and the name suspects a co-production with studio electronics :o )

Sounds ok, plenty of low end weight, but the toy town format and the middle of the road sound......
IF I were going to get a 3osc I would go for the behringer, if a mono the Erebus because the oscillators are by far the sexiest on the market unless you spend silly money.

Roland being typically meh, essentially.

As an industrial designer myself I cant think of any good and honest reason to design products that have such bad ergonomics. I tried the jp something and the tr09 and it made small sense as a standalone device(to me). I get the small formfactor thing, though when you're jamming out you dont want to feel like you are building a model boat. You want to stear a fucking cruise ship.

Regardless of the sound, which is pretty decent I hear.

So yeah, bit of a random outburst on the boutique size 8-)

IT`s just stupid.

Who out there seriously is saying "I really want a 3osc synth, but I want it with really small nobs that are quite hard to just reach for, and that I can only really use with my fingertips, oh and I also only want to use minijacks, because my entire studio is based around them"??????

Can I haz the opportunity to design a synth for that format, please? Cause this design looks like anything else. Bored.

That's the company which committed green AIRA thingies we're talking about. If you are a tabby cat with a pencil, you already have their designers in disadvantage.

I actually love my Ju-06, form factor and all. So I don't mind that this is a boutique. I'm just not sure I need to spend $500 on a hardware monosynth.

I do like the sound of it, but for that money I'd want it to be a bit bigger really. I don't actually have a massive problem with the boutique size if the price is right, I picked up a JX-03 for £210 and that seemed fair to me - tiny synth (but sounds ok), tiny price. But spending £500 and having to put up with all the same compromises seems a bit harsh. If I was after a small desktop 3 oscillator mono synth I reckon I'd save myself £100ish by picking up a Pulse 2 instead, might be lacking knob per function but does a shitload more and the knobs it does have are big and smooth.

Pulse 2 is just a whole different interface (and really relying on the display).
It's all about the (almost) one knob per function with the Roland, but you have to be a midget to use them (with a respect to midgets; i've seen one frequently around at some local techno party's).
You have to be able to use a synth without using tweezers... .

Yeah to be fair Pulse 2 is something else entirely, just popped into my head when thinking about small 3osc monosynths. I have a volca keys which is pretty tweezerish, but as it was £100 I'm ok with that. For £500 I wanna be able to throw my elbows around and get my vinegar face on the go when I'm playing with the big fat cutoff knob, not put my lab coat on and measure adjustments in microns.

Full size
Analog
Polysynth

...which is...

Not ugly

and throw a keyboard there too ... a desktop module sounds like a great idea , until you realize you need even more cables , and keyboard controller even to get it to play one note... yikes...
