What are you listening to?
Re: What are you listening to?
fuck me, now that I think of it, this guy's been dead for almost 20 years by now.
We're seriously getting old.

Re: What are you listening to?
This guy played with Chet Baker, my favorite trumpet player by far,
in the last decade of Chet's career (which is also my absolute favorite part).
Apparently he is also known for his excellent interpretations of Bill Evans,
who is one of my favorite jazz pianists,
and yet I never heard of this guy till this morning...
I always wish I could play better when I hear stuff like this.
I could practice more, but I would only get there with maybe 10 hours a week, and as soon as I'd stop keeping up that tempo,
I'd lose it again. So most likely not for me in this life time.

New Koan album
Re: What are you listening to?
hey, lazy bitch
I just enjoyed that wonderful documentary you posted a link to. (thaaaaaankk you !!)
I'm too lazy myself trying to figure all of this out, and Koan sounds like a far too general name to have me googling it and not ending up listening to some Goa trance album.
links ??

Man. I just don't give a shit (and I'm drunk.... had to work this afternoon, so compensated myself afterwards)
It's cheesy... But this was THE FUCKING BOMB in the late 90's. Sunny vibes summer house perfection.
Made you think you were in Brasil, when in fact you were in some shitty club in Birmingham on a rainy Saturday in some shit-hole of a club, fucking dreading work on Monday, hating life, but for 5 mins, spending your week's wages, imagining you were on some beach that you saw on a post-card one time. Taking a mini-holiday from depressing life with some help from rum n coke, and some little things with various logos on.
Pure escapism...

I didn't even know this guy was still alive.
With his lifestyle that's damn miracle he got to be so old.

I always knew you secretly were that techno producer that loves Gucci.
you know, I already get pretty horrified by that kind of bling bling rap,
but whenever I see those video's, I never know whether to laugh or puke.
I can just imagine the brainstorming those folks need to be doing before they make a new video :
"yooo, what's a sign of big cash yoo ?
"bitches yo, lots of bitches"
"but they've done that already in every bling bling video, we need something better"
"a lamborghini ???"
"pfff, not enough, let's put in 2 lamborghini's at least yooo"
"ok, but we still need something even better, what about a jet fighter"
"wooooo, great yooo, great, let's snort some more coke, this gives massive idea's"
...
8 lines of coke and 1 phone-call to the record company later...
"yooo, dem bitches say we don't have enough budget for and 2 lambo's and them bitches and a firejet"
"fuck yo, FUCKK !!!"
"but they said we could use some old army chopper"
"aaaaiiiiigghttt !!!"

Re: What are you listening to?
I really don't care what you think about it. Hip-Hop was my first love and will have a place in my heart. I really don't care about the video. When I listen to rap music I only have 2 criterias: 1. Is it a cool beat? 2. Does the MC have a tight flow?Hades wrote:you see mono,Mono-xID wrote:youtu.be/I-IOYVfYHR8

Both of these criteria's answered for myself with: Yes.
Production wise German rap made a huge step forward and is on par with French and US fellas in some cases.
You don't like, you don't listen, easy. But don't make jokes over things other people might like.
Re: What are you listening to?
if we can't have a laugh from time to time, our lives would be rather boring.
I'm not laughing with your taste man, I'm laughing with the bling bling shit, and in tis case specifically the video's that accompany those tracks.
you know I totally loved your CunninLynguists tip a few years ago.
and you know (because I told you) I had a similar period with rap when I was in my teens.
But it's exactly because of this old love that I was always completely turned off as soon as the bling bling started to come in.
If you like that stuff, then you like that stuff,
des goûts et des couleurs...
that's no problem at all.
here's one of my old favorites from my teens :

Re: What are you listening to?
Well, with rap it's the same as with techno for me. I really love the deep stuff but from time to time it has to be a banger.
Re: What are you listening to?
you know what it is that turns me off with all that bling bling shit ?
Deep down in my heart, I will always stay this sort of naïve communist fucker
(mind you, just communism as a pure idea, NOT the practical forms we've seen in the 20th century, which I don't need to explain to you)
someone who truly believes this world needs more sharing and less focus on material shit.
And bling bling rap is just one of the worst examples of all the worst parts of capitalistic society that I can think of...
I know you just listen to the beats and like it for that, but we've already come to a certain age,
we got enough mileage to see through that shit as what it is : just superficial shit,
but I honestly think a lot of young teens can't see through that shit,
they don't know these guys most likely don't even own the fancy cars,
and in a way they are trapped into the make-believe shit of our consumerism society,
and they learn to be a good boy slave of it,
to buy expensive cell-phones on credit, to buy a BMW on credit,
to look down on other people because they don't own a fancy car, or hey, they don't go to the stupid gym enough,
or don't have the right Gucci jeans...
They are trapped into believing money = success = happiness.
I can't think of a more stupid thing to believe in.
We both grew up in the 80's, and I have no doubt yours must have been 20x harder than mine, knowing where you grew up,
but yeah, that idea of some great über-capitalism free market society, we've seen enough proof that it's totally shit.
And every bling bling rap video is only still trying to trick people into making them believe it's still the way to go...
Anyway, apologies for the rambling, just thought I needed to explain why it is I really get turned off by bling bling rap.
Call me a naïve idealistic motherfucking cunt.

Re: What are you listening to?
also, I totally get your pride in the fact that German rap has (finally) made a proper step forward.
I always had a certain pride in Dutch rap as well, but in that aspect we can't complain,
we had quality Dutch rap since the mid 90's, though pretty much always from Holland, and not from Belgium.
This one is done in the same dialect as where I'm from,
and it always puts a smile on my face when I hear it
(a shame they stopped making tracks ages ago) :
(bad quality sound though)

Only the shit cliche stuff.
Think of that kind of shit like Bumload compared to more imaginative techno.
There is a ton of hip hop out there that is doing great shit, where they actually say something, have a message, and don't try to sound like generic US gangster rap.
I've not heard any German hip hop but a lot more French stuff suffers from trying to sound like US shit.
We have had some fairly cool stuff here that is very.... It's own thing rather than sounding like US shit.
I'm a big fan of Terminator, Darkside Pioneer.
Who literally spearheaded a new wave of hiphop coming from grime and UK hiphop.
We have people like giggs here too.
Then you have BLACKIE and Clipping (and Death Grips, who changed everything).
But yeah, fuck US gansgta rap, that shit is done. Dead.
Re: What are you listening to?
US gangsta rap is not dead, but its not very alive either.

I grew up in my teens with my best friends being totally into rap.
When things started to change during my college years, I still got to listen to tons of highly original rap,
even if I was, myself, totally immersed into other genres of music...
Mono mentioned CunninLynguists to me a while ago,
and these guys are exactly why I used to like rap in the first place.
As the West-Flemish guys say in the video I posted above : "many make noise, but few have something to say"
All that bling bling shit : it sounds totally dead to me...
