Nerds vs Musicians

trance used to be a LOT darker and leaning more towards techno back when I had my first few years with synths and was still actively DJ'ing.
there's a lot of trance from say '93 till around '97 that still puts a smile on my face when I hear it today.

I had this conversation the other day with some progressive - psychedelic trance friends about the profile of people doing dance music. Their percpective was that people who do trance are more musicians deep inside than people that do techno and people that do techno are more nerdish with music technology than people doing trance. Personally I ve met a lot of people with a strong theoritical - musical background doing both and also tech nerds doing both. What do you think of this?

lol obviously this is BS; but then i agree there is a line between people who are more into the actual musical output and people who are more gear enthusiasts, or nerds if you wanna call em like that, who love to fiddle on their 3000$ modular setup to produce a mouse fart. that line doesnt have anything to do with a certain style though.

Think it's fair to say trance is more overtly melody-focused but melody is still a huge part in techno although it's so subtle, imo, for coherence, possibly more so as it ventures into dissonance so requires an even deeper understanding of melody.

But okay, I don't actually hate trance quite as much as that would imply. I was (and still am) a big fan of the trance-y side of ambient dub from the 90s. Like this:

Yeah man, I liked it back in the day. Early trance was a bit rougher and darker. I got off the bus in the mid-90s, when it transformed into the dreary super punchy kick + gated vocals + supersaw formula.

Yeah, it crashed face first into a brick wall of boring as fuck formulaic drum roll riser cheap thrill pill garbage towards the end of the nineties. It deserved a kicking but I guess it just became 'pop' club music for the magnolia masses...

I mean, stuff like this is timeless. You could drop it today and it would still work.
Simple, minimal, emotional, hypnotic, not cheesy.
