Classic mixer overdrive in the box - how?

Post by Plyphon »

Hello,

This might be a simple question...

But whats the best technique to emulate the classic Mackie mixer type channel input overdrive in the box?

Is every "drive" function essentially doing the same?

Cheers

Try obscene levels of ny comp running into the Ableton amp. Tears up 808,s.
Creativity is not a technique, it is a way of life.

I'll try that, sounds fun.

I really want to make some banging 909 kicks, but nothing I have that has a drive knob quite cuts it.

Softtube do a free saturation plugin which might be worth a look. I think it's just the saturation stage from their other plugins.

Also, have a look at Skdnote Disto, a weapons grade compressor with overdrive too. It sounds great on kick drums.
Previews and clips are in the playlist below:

I'll second Softube Saturation Knob, I once put 3 of em on a kick all on different settings and it changed a boring kick into 909ish kick amazing plugin.

SDRR (on of the best soft sats out there) actually has one of it`s 4 different sat modes as Desk drive.
It`s not Mackie desk drive (which was kinda gacky) but it does do very good british style desk drive.
Plus you have individual control over transients, the compression effect, and tube EQ, as well as the drive itself.
Secret weapon plugin.

Yeah, I have SDRR - I can never get quite the 909 overdrive sound I want. It certainly drives stuff, stuff thuds when it goes through it, but I can never really get *that* style of overdrive, if you know what i mean?

I think the saturator in Live comes close enough to the Mackie sound. I have a CR1604 & really, you can make the Saturator sound as fried or as ballsy as you like, just like the 1604.. with a few twists. Adding drive, then dialling it back the same amount on the output level gets you close enough.

That`s more an element of user rather than gear though, I can get nice driven 909`s quite well with the SDRR, though I think the Tube mode is better for kicks as you have much more control, the dynamics setting particularly, lets you dial in the punch to taste.

You problem is more technique than which plugin to use.

Yeah.. sometimes its simply case of tweaking by ear until you hear the sweet spot combination unlock. Knowing what all the controls are capable of certainly helps.

The number of times I've seen this exact topic come up across various forums, I'm surprised no-one has tried to cash in with a simple, dedicated emulation of the effect. Anyway +1 for SDRR, its a great plugin for the price.

So I figured it out - too much low end in the kick post overdrive. I took out some 50-200hz by a few DB and suddenly i'm in the zone.

My problem with almost everything. Plugins completely satisfy "artificial consumption needs". It is like H&M just for music (never laugh again about people telling you they have clothes in their wardrobe with the price tag still being attached to it). I really had to stop myself from trying this and that and start using what I actually have.

instead of using one drive once, you can drive/distort, eq, drive/distort, eq, drive/distort, eq, drive/distort, eq over and over to get a different effect. that's the basic formula for the super distorted kicks for hardstyle. i know that isn't the sound you're after but it a decent technique for the sound.

Sdrr seems like a nice juicer. will give it a ring, thanks for the tip I was looking for some stuff next to saturn. Saturn isnt the best in general saturation i find.

DERP. It's Decapitator not Radiator.
