Recommendations on first outboard processor
What would you guys recommend for a first piece of outboard signal processing gear? Something I could run both analog and digital signals through to liven them up that would be worth the money?
Just curious what you all think.

Depends on your budget really. Maybe a Sherman filterbank if you want wild analogue filtering, an Ensoniq DP/4 if you want vibey 90s multieffects? (I bought a strymon Mobius at the same time as the DP/4 and the Mobius sounded plasticy in comparison; sold it off straight away)

iotine core, ultra-harmonizer or cheap alesis quadraverb

Budget? So many options will be limited by budget....Whats youre budget?
Re: Recommendations on first outboard processor
wouldn't recommend the filterbank as a first piece of outboard tbh.frico wrote:Depends on your budget really. I picked mine (2x2) up at Herman's place a few years back, and I totally love what he's doing,
but I have to say it's one of my least used pieces here.
I also bought a Rodec/Sherman Restyler while I was there (after he convinced me to test it out on his ghetto-ish DJ setup),
and I have to say I like that thing a lot more.
But as a first piece of outboard gear,
I think something like the DP4 might be far more useful.
You get a lot of options for the money.

There are many nice FX units, it's kinda addictive . First give some pointers about your budget please.
Must be pedal or 19" format or doesn't matter?

Re: Recommendations on first outboard processor
maybe he wants a banana format that comes with extra lubricants.

Re: Recommendations on first outboard processor
Definitely gonna need that if he wants to go analog with a 19" banana:D !

Yes, some use it.
Re: Recommendations on first outboard processor
Wow, so pretty much no budget. For $2K you should be able to get any of the options listed here.
I recently picked up an old lexicon vortex and am pretty happy with it. It can sound a bit thin but it produces some very cool textures, good for running as a parallel channel.

I've been curious about the DP/4 since a bunch of cool producers use it and it's quite affordable compared to most FX boxes. Does it have algorithms that sound different than the usual VST fx?

that's exactly how I pick my dildo's as well.dubdub wrote:I've been curious about the DP/4 since a bunch of cool producers use it.
If George or Elton is using it,
it's good enough for me honey

but on a more serious note...
I've been wondering about this as well :

though I doubt I need more FX nor HW gear at all...dubdub wrote:Does it have algorithms that sound different than the usual VST fx?

Re: Recommendations on first outboard processor
i like my dp4 but i think there are in the box stuff that sounds more modern. It can sound quite digital at times... but shit sometimes its the limitation of being able to only control one param at a time and cycle through presets that really gets you where somewhere quickly. In that sense I like the DP/4.
H3000 would be another goodie in that realm.
I do think external effects are best used with external gear because of the whole latency thing but however you wanna work that is cool.
For livening up sound i think the analog heat is a safe bet bet. You'll be able to go from obvious distortion to slight warmth in stereo at not much cost. Don't have one myself but anything else that I would want for processing for warmth/excitement would be in the $2,000 - $10,000 range.

Re: Recommendations on first outboard processor
DP/4 is the go to. Can be hard to find sometimes, right?
I was talking more along the lines of a compressor or something, something versatile.
Do we have any user opinions on the Analog Heat? I wonder how it would compliment my OP-1...

Maybe some kind of preamp, these are the things I am really uneducated about.
