Have to agree. I've had dell laptops for audio and 3D cad over the years and no major issues, always found them easy to strip back and keep drivers updated. Maybe they've changed since...

Dell gets a bad rap. I've never owned one but I've used them with no issues.

Will Report how it does. Apart from the sd reader and the nvidia card all is useable as hackintosh. Went for full hd instead of 4k

so.. I got the laptop. Downloading windows at the moment to make a clean install. Build quality looks really good. The screen is nice as well.
How is it these days?
Do I need a virusscanner (slowing down the system I guess)? What about defragmenting the SSD (I know that in win xp times this had to be done regulary)? Are there any necessary tools I need (like little snitch for os x for example)?

For a virus scanner just use Microsoft Security Essentials. It's free and incredibly competitive with even paid-for anti-virus'

Do not defrag your SSD - it actually reduces the lifespan of an SSD doing a defrag (lots of writes in a short space of time) but also since Windows 7 the OS auto-defrags as it goes to avoid ever having to do one massive defragmentation like back in the day. You can just leave it :)

That sounds good.
I tried to hackintosh the last two days and while I got OS X running and made most hardware working properly I just couldn't get wifi and sound activated. Not sure why also usb plugged things like wifistick or soundcard were not recognized by the system whereas usb drives work without any problems.
Will go back to win 10 (my live projects were crasing when I tried three days ago that is why I wanted to go back to OS X) as hackintosh is too much computerwork for me and seems more like a "hobbyproject" for computer/it people than a solution to get a working relieable system on a non apple machine.
will have to find out why live is crashing. the number of not registered software is not 0 but there aren't too many of them so i have to change those and maybe install the max 4 live devices i used (i was under the impression that those get saved with the project). hmm lots of work. And also it is very hard to tell which drivers from the dell website are important and which are for stuff like special trackpad features and other stuff i probably don't need. searched the web but I think I will have get used to it that there is way less info on certain windows laptops than there is on mac computers. so trial and eror until i have a stable system.
hope this is going to happen....

So everything is working fine now. The problem was Max MSP. Didn't install first gonna finish the track and take another reverb than the convolution one.
Unfortunately I have to say that performancewise there is a small increase (maybe 20% or so, using the internal realtek card with 512 Samples (which in fact does come with an asio driver that performs better than asio4all) vs the internal macbook one using core audio and 1024 Samples). Gonna connect to my audiointerface tomorrow. Hope a proper driver will help saving some more resources). The system seems stable now but things like glitches when connecting a usb stick and other little things are not the end of the world but did not appear in os x. MAybe they switch their course at one point and start building computers that people can pay for. For now I will stay with windows I suppose... .

Was you able to keep all your programs on C drive installed when you switched over from 7 to 10?

Did you have to reinstall anything related to your DAW?

Didn'T know that there were energyoptions within the os which were set to average by default. Switched to high performance and I have to say I didn't have any problems yet. Performance got better and the CPU meter isn't jumpoing anymore.
Got Paragon +HTS or something like that so I can read and write on os x disks - all working.
Really happy with the choice. So far I am also quite happy with the build quality of the dell. Can't say anything about blowware as I extracted the OEM serial and downloaded a clean windows which works without any problems

Talked to my brother in law last night and he really likes Windows10. He's working for year and years in the IT-bussines and knows what he's talking about.
But because my Edirol UM-550 doesn't have a Windows10 driver I need to stick with Windows7.

Been using Win 10 for about a year now. I have to say it's the most stable OS I've ever used.

Gonna chime in here with support for setting up a Hackintosh. Best decision I could ever have made.

Windows 8 was nothing but aggravating. Lots of little quirks and headaches that just kept adding up and interrupting my workflow. Apple hardware is just too overpriced. A hackintosh was the answer. Took a bit of work to setup, but I've had zero problems for over a year. Hasn't crashed once (literally).

Hmm, don't really get why the Dell hate? I've had 2 Dell laptops the last 10 years, both served me perfectly. Robust, reliable, never had any real problems with them.

I've been a proud owner of an Acer for the last 6 years. My next one will be either another Acer or Dell. Good to hear all those good feedback on the latest Windows. I didn't like it when I used it for a very short amount of time.

Not hating on Apple but I don't think I'll ever switch to Mac, same as I can't see myself switching to Android.
