anyone running a waldorf blofeld?

Post by yentz »

hi!
is anyone using a waldorf blofeld?
reading the specs is sounds like a decent synth with lots of possibillities. how does it sound? also how is the midi cc implementation? is it possible to switch programs fast using a program change (sending program change to my minilogue is not working properly whereas my minitaur does this without any problems). when doing fm is there any way to modulate the volume of the modulating oscillator with an extra envelope or some other modulation source?
Those synths go for 200 euro which seems a good price considering the possibillities.

I had one borrowed for a while. It's a really nice digital wavetable synth for the price but it's like using a VST in a box with a tiny screen and menu diving and only a few clunky encoders . Just made me want to have a big screen and a mouse to edit things. If you aren't running an OTB setup, might aswell run the Largo VST, which is easier to edit and can do the Blofeld sounds and more. But that's just my opinion.

I heard bad news about the encoder quality.

I think Largo is even available on IOS so I mightr check out this. ohh no just saw it is called nave. Hmmm.
Bad encoders are a nightmare. Had a Yamaha A3000 once nad the encoders got bad after some time. Really hard test on my temper.

The encoders on the unit I had were a nightmare, some of them didn't work half of the time for no apparent reason.

I have one. Cool synth but for some reason i rarely use it anymore. Need to invest some more time in it to create some nice pads. For me the sound quality is not better then any digital synth, always need to put some FX on it before it sounds decent.

Used the blofeld for this track though (for some sound impression): https://soundcloud.com/remykruyer/remy- ... o-chi-minh

Good to know. I get really angry if such an encoder thing happens. Same as if the remote control just works every 10th time. Might have a look for something else I guess.
Nice track by the way !!!

I've not used mine in the in the way you are describing here. Usually I record the audio from it as that is how I work. The sound is good. One of the best features is the filter imo , it sounds really dirty when over driven but in a clean way, not like the MS20 which is noisy in comparison.

You can modulate almost everything I'm sure. There is a modulation matrix which is very deep. I'd bet you can do what you are asking. I might give it a go if I get a chance.

I am a Blofeld fanboy. It offers great value for money in a well built package. I've heard about issues with encoders, but I'm not sure if it was a dodgy batch or early versions of the unit when they were produced. I've never had any issues on mine at all the encoders are great imo and have a very nice quality feel to them. A much nicer feel than the ones on the machinedrum.

There are some really cool vst editors as well if that's your thing, a nice looking one from Patrick DSP in Max for live that I've been meaning to purchase. but I'm still using one from 2008 which works fine.

In the early days they had issues with software as well. But they eventually sorted that out. I don't use mine for live performance but is rock solid OS and hardware.

I don't think you would need to switch between programs because it has 16 channel multi mode. How that works I don't know as I've never used it in that way.

Hmm. I am still uncertain. Just kind of switched to a hardware only setup just recording and arranging in live so getting a used one for 200 would be cool but fucked encoders would be an absolute nightmare. i might go to a store and skip through the presets. didn't realize that is can do 25 voices (according to thoman).

Not the worlds best interface as others have stated, but I really like mine (keyboard version). Mostly I like the sound, its very digital and metallic and cold. Would not be my only synth but it fits really great in the mix and thats whats important. I use the PatrickDSP editor with it also, makes things a little easier.

No encoder problems with mine, works perfectly.

I bought a second hand desktop blofeld 10 months ago. Never had any issues with the encoders and never heard about people who did. I got used to the menu-diving pretty quick and find it quite intuitive actually. Still going to build my own midi controller however so I can change the important parameters without changing between menu's. The multi-mode is awesome, it essentially gives you ten blofelds in one and you can choose different midi channels for every sound. I can't really judge the sound as it's my first and only hardware synth. I'd probably buy it again, there's just so many features and options in the box for the money that you put in.

The only thing I don't like is the price of the extra audio plugins on the waldorf website and that you need an expensive license for some of them to free up extra space.

The white one looks half decent and the black one is ugly, nothing else.

as far as I know there is no difference except that you will automatically get a newer version of the software with the black version. that said, the software upgrade is a doddle.
