Walk - Jordanneke

Post by jordanneke »

Sketched the idea to this a few weeks ago, laid it down in a couple of hours today. Not going to set the world on fire, but yet here it is....

Pretty sure it's house, but really I guess genres aren't that important.

Happy to know your thoughts.

It sounds nice, no major complaints with the mix. The lowend isn't bad but it's a little flappy and unfocussed and the dry kick could punch in the lows a bit more. The highs and high mids a liiiitle bit too fuzzy and unfocussed from the saturation, I'd say. The stereo image could use a bit of work I think, the hats on the left are quite prominent and there is nothing on the right that really pulls similiar attention, I'd put them a bit nearer towards the center or pan some stuff more to the right to counteract them. The synths, except for the bass, which is of course fine in the center, are a bit narrow in terms of stereo, right now the drums are around the synths in terms of stereo, I think it'd sound nice if you had the chords/pads or the string really enveloping the stereo image.

Yo Dubdub.

I really appreciate your feedback. You really have an ear for detail that I find quite amazing.

I listened to your feedback, but not looked at the saturation details yet. I changed the track in the header.

Thanks

nice track, really cool dreamy vibe, reminds me of some older works from the italian bros!

kick could be a litte less clicky, would have been nice if the pads are a tad sharper and the hats a bit more crisp (s they would float on top a little bit).

keep up the good work! and yess this is house, as it should be :)

I'm really craving more energy in the high end. Some swirling background white noise perhaps if you don't want to invest more in the hats. I think this kind of subdued track would greatly benefit from an atmospheric field recording to give it more depth too.

Pretty good. The kick could be tighter, now it's kinda lazy and reduces the energy of the track. Someone said the pads should be sharper, if that means faster attack then I completely disagree, to me it's the opposite, I'd prefer them to have a longer attack so they'd be a bit more dreamy. The closed hats have the same problem my closed hats very often have - they sound like a robot is playing mechanical typewriter. It's especially pronounced after 1:00. I've found that increasing the attack time of the volume envelope a bit helps, sometimes transient designers do the trick.

I really appreciate the feedback lads. It's been a while since I loaded ableton, yet alone turned my pc on. As soon as I get the chance i'll implement your ideas and see how it sounds.

Not my taste, although I love house, but well produced in my opinion and I agree with Barfunkel, DubDub regarding the kick. Maybe more changes in the drums to keep more the attention

Good music. The kick / bass part clamps down a bit too much on the other elements of the mix in my opinion. Just a tiny bit. Might be due to bus compression / distortion (low end takes the big part of the spectrum and stressing the other sounds?).

I do not agree about the stereo image, personally I'd back down a bit on the reverb on the hats to make it sound more narrow. This type of warm, body-heavy music doesn't sound right with too much wide-ness to me.

The kick is a bit woolly and lacks that snap impact but it kinda makes sense in this track. The snare turns around the initial feeling of the kick and give the track a teasing bite of that snap impact I'm talking about. I quite like that.

Also I'd look into craving out some around 200hz and 350hz from the kick and also 200hz on the bassline.

Again, can't thank people enough to take the time to listen to the stuff I create, and even happier that some of you like it. When I have time i'll upload a new version.

M, what do you hear that allows you to be so specific?

I meant, what did you hear that enabled you to think 'cut somewhere about 200hz'.

I've done it, and it sounds better, but I'd never know to do this.

This just comes from experience and training your ears over time to develop acute hearing to the general balance of frequencies in a track.

Mattias will also have a different monitoring setup and most likely very high quality monitoring. So that combined with his experience / trained ears will be your answer.

When i went to college i studied mastering for a couple years just for the experience of it and it really trained my ears to understand frequency better. We would regularly do a frequency test, where we'd have to listen to a sine wave frequency and try and estimate what the frequency is. This type of training combined with constantly critically listening to music and analysing it really helped develop my ears. And im no where near the level of a professional mastering engineer, in which it kind of boggles my mind how good their ears must be...
Dont take life so seriously

Yeah, I can see that... (I don't have any of that training).

Is there anyway I can tell for future tracks...I mean is there some sort of tell tail signature? Or will I just need to learn through experience?

Anyway I've incorporated all the feedback and come up with my finished track

Both experience and signature. I'm just not cut out to explain how the signature sounds. Maybe undefined / thick in the upper bass / low-mids.
I suck at that sort of thing

Great work Jordanneke. It's a perfect soundtrack for a nice summer evening.
I love the interplay between the kick and the other percussive elements and your chords/pads are on point as always.
