Barfunkel's ambient side project

Post by Barfunkel »

As I said in another topic, I'm planning to partake in FAWM this year and write 14 ambient tunes in 28 days.

As I'm no ambient expert, I decided to make some practice tracks first. Caroline is the first one, made in about an hour this morning.

Sorry about using Bandcamp, my SC account is full and I wanted a separate page for this project.

Octatrack, Analog Four, Streichfett, Big Sky.

He man, Im not sure what you are after ambient wise. But for me its to sequenced to be ambient. And als maybe try and fade sounds in, instead of dropping them in. Also I think the pads you start with are to clear as wel, you could maybe go full wet reverb on them with maximum decal and ad some delay as well, maybe ptich them down to make them real suiting and warm. You could also lower the bpm or make the sequences longer to give it a slower feel.

These are just some suggestions though. I like the sound design though as always, and the track, but I wouldnt label it as ambient yet.

Not quite sure what you mean by too sequenced, ambient is not exactly known for loose live playing. Maybe some older ambient from an era sequencers didn't even exist yet, but even that tends to be quite rigid.

Listened to the track a few times on repeat now, I think it's biggest mistake is being way too busy. Maybe I should lower the tempo and make the sequences a bit less hectic.

Thanks for listening!

Uploaded a new version! No idea if it's any better than before though.

I think its better man.

What I ment with sequenced is that you can hear when the chord start and end. For example when you raise the attack and release they will tend to be much more flowing and thus less "sequenced".

I'm really bad at technical stuff so sorry if I was a bit confusing.

I agree with Alume, I don't really think it's ambient either. Ambient for me is about slow, evolving textures and this sounds like a dance track without a kick drum. Almost like those Ibiza chill out compilation albums that were big for 2 minutes, 10 years ago.

Its true. Its like a dance track without the beat. it sorta becomes ambient as the hypnotism kicks in. Stuff is sort of dropped in tho.

The bass is quite intense really. It sucks you in because its tangible and you feel like you are in it. Even like its shaking you. Play this on ket and it will blow your mind.

In music theory they say that short sharp sounds create tension. So with the twinkly sound and the synth and the bass being full of tension and being on all the time (separately or together) your whole track is holding tension that is never released. The strings only play alone at the start of the track.

So i think choice of sounds might be a factor.

The vocal is fine. Has a nice texture and seems to fit. But when you drop it in at the start we follow it right into the track. I would treat that as a texture and fade it in. Just sort of 'in' the track (I dont need to know that someone is talking.

It sounded pretty dark to me. I liked it.

Illbeint?

I enjoyed it up until the synth in the second half, they came in really abruptly, without much warning. Kinda like old hardcore records used to do.

The sound choice of the synth itself sounds a little thin/cheap, to me any how

Ha! Someone paid 1€ voluntarily for the track! Soon I'm going to be a millionaire!

Thanks for the comments, they are appreciated.

Here's another one, it's a bit more ambient-y maybe.

Dunno if this is ambient, as it has a drum beat. I thought the distorted 808-ish drums give it a nice contrast.

These new ones are much more ambient. pt1 and pt2 are quite scary. So not the ambience I would be looking for when trying to lose myself. Real horror show.

The 3rd one is really cool tune.

Pt3 is really nice, i like that i dont know how to classify it, its just a cool piece of spacious music. Sounds really big and spacious, and like you said the drums contrast really nicely with it.
