Kali Audio IN-8 monitor speakers

Post by Barfunkel »

Just ordered a pair of these, the 2nd Wave version, after reading some very favorable reviews and Voidloss also recommends them.

Kali Audio is known for sometimes having reliability issues, I hope my pair is fine and works fine for a long time.

It'll be interesting how they'll work in my untreated room.

Not so much reliability as quality control.
The first set I ordered had a problem with one of the amps, returned them, got a new pair, all perfect.

Finally received these! They work perfectly, no QC issues and the sound seems really balanced and accurate. Just didn't realize how freakin' huge these are lol. Haven't had a chance to play them out really loud yet though.

The house is empty so I can safely play these as loud as I want. Really like what I'm hearing when I turn them up. Essentially the sound remains the same at every volume and the bass is controlled and doesn't overpower everything else. My friend has Yamaha HS-8''s and I really dislike them at loud volumes and it would be difficult for me to make mixing decisions because the bass is so, well, bassy.

Yeah the 8`s are fucking big, almost a midfield monitor, they take up more space on my desk than I was prepared for, but you won`t find a better sound at that price point.
I think the HS8`s are a great monitor, but yeah, the low end gets a little woolly, the extension is good but the transients get a little mushy in the low end.

The In-8`s don`t have this problem. I no longer use the sub in the production room as I get more than enough lows from these.
The front ports are designed very well, I`ve not heard any audible chuffing even when pushing massive basslines at relatively high volume.
The mid range is lovely though, tight, super detailed without being voiced forward to do so.
I get good translation to the mastering room.
It can be jarring to those who haven`t worked on 3 ways as the top end transients are so clean you can end up dialing the tops back, so you just need time to get used to them, you aren`t getting a louder top end, you are just getting a much cleaner transient. So these do push you into dealing with dynamics more than just frequency, and this is a good thing.
