Korg Opsix
There's no guarantee this will make it into production but it could be interesting.
Behind the glass at the Korg stand at NAMM, is a prototype of what looks like an homage to the DX7:
However, it has a filter, sequencer an some of the legending reads thus: FM, Ring Mod, Wave Folder, Filter FM. So much more than just an FM synth.

Seen that pop up the other day. It's really tasty looking.. AND they remembered to put the controls on it. That alone is commendable!
Saw a comment about it being the same browny colour as some of the dx synths. I had a dx21, I think it was.. and it was a strange purpley brown colour. Almost glittery if you looked at it wrong. Mad shade.

It would appear KACKBRAUN is becoming the new expression for that dx colour over at GS.

That looks great, not the 80`s looking mess of the prototype.Ben Kohonays wrote: ↑Mon Nov 09, 2020 5:57 amIt shrunk.

So everybody in FM is the new line from the GAP then?

It does look great. I think with FM it's all about whether the inerface makes it worth taking out of the box. The MegaFM seems to nail that and justifies its existance in hardware form. Interesting to see how this approaches it - beyond what we can see on the photo.

Yeah my eye of Sauron was on the MegaFM, but it`s shifting a little now. All depends on the sounds and features, but I like the way Korgs modern lines are. So far all their new stuff has been solid, with nice unique features, great sound.Boiled Egg wrote: ↑Mon Nov 09, 2020 6:43 pmIt does look great. A nice FM is about all I need synth wise now.
Re: Korg Opsix
The interface looks great. Loopop did a vids.. loads of vids out now actually.. haven't watched any of them all the way through yet but I haven't heard any dirt so far.
Will have a longer look / listen later today probably.
Still waiting for the megafm. I have it ordered from Thomann but waiting on stock to come in . Curious about the opsix, but nothing I've heard has set my heart racing.

Re: Korg Opsix
Yeah it sounds great too.
I think I`m gonna plump for this over the Mega FM. Reason being is that in every demo of the MEga I`ve heard, the dynamics are really flat, at least compared with the Opsix. Something about the snap of the envelopes I think, but it doesn`t jump, it sounds compressed.

I think the Korg wins for me. The MegaFM looks great to use but I can't stop thinking Golden Axe and Streets of Rage when I hear it.

Jeez.. starts off slow but gets interesting once he goes off-road.
Some very cool sounds. Some synth alright

Cuckoo reviews are frustrating ey?
He's a blathering hippy-ster but he's really endearing and loves making music. I can't help but persevere with his reviews as he does reveal interesting tips.

Re: Korg Opsix
Yeah this seems to have retained the features that made the prototype look interesting. Not sure about the 3 octaves though, but they may well bring out a module later.
This vs MegaFM.... the MegaFM looks more immediate with a simple easy to use interface, but this is obviously much deeper. I can imagine having explored the MegaFM over say, a year, you might feel you've wrung out all you can from it, or almost. The Opsix looks like something that would take many years to feel that way.

Re: Korg Opsix
i had the megaFM for a while - very nice interface, really useable. the sound is cool initially but for me got old pretty quick... its a wee bit one dimensional. tbh a volca fm / tx81z and a midi/sw controller will take you way further. ymmv. the opsix is obviously light years ahead..
Re: Korg Opsix
Yeah I can see that alright regarding the megafm.
Actually, that's possibly the reason why I like the idea of the MFM.. and why I think the amount of options on the op6 could be potentially overwhelming.
It's hard to know. Need to try these things out & see what sticks. I want to get something new thats a bit different.
Still waiting for MFM stock to arrive. My only concern about it would be around the output level / noise (floor?). Could be a MEGA PITFA. Any comments that Mr.K?

its a bit noisey, not a big deal though.... its not piano recitals we're at
Re: Korg Opsix
I would love a new FM synth. There is a few on the market now I guess with the Digitone, Yamaha Reface DX, Volca FM, Montage, ModX and probably others (Peak?) around. Plus Eurorack offerings.
Spoilt for choice.

Did anyone pick up an op6?
