Roland JX-03

Post by ekkor »

Hi!
Does anyone here have Roland Boutique JX-03? Suddenly found out that at least the original Roland JX-3P does the sound I really like.
I'm tempted to buy JX-03, although it is already out of production.
Do you like it? Aren't the buttons too small? How about sound, programming?
thanks!

I've got one, and had a real JX-3P for a few years. It sounds very similar to the JX-3P, though my JX-3P had an insanely noisy chorus that you had to gate on any recording. Bass is a little thinner, but not by much and the JX-3P was never a great synth for bass anyway.

Some people don't like the small size of the JX-03, but this doesn't bother me. The synth is well laid out and easy to use. The only downside is, like the original, the presets suck and there aren't enough slots for user patches (though you can save/load them from your computer too). Well, it's 4 voices (vs 6 for the original), so that could be a drag but doesn't really matter for me.

Very nice, thanks! One more question, are the buttons OK? I mean, are they solid, not wobble?

I've got one, have had it since they were still fairly new out. It sounds great. Never had the original, but have an HS-60 in the studio and it stands up to that very well. Knobs are small yes, and not enough space between them; unless you are working with very limited space it's too small imo. That being said, I got the jx-03 over the Juno or Jupiter as I thought the knobs would have more play and thus more precision than the really short faders, and they do allow for decent editing. One thing that really annoys me, the mod touch strip works great, but you can't assign it to fuck all! I'm sure on the original you could assign it to various parts of the synth as on the Juno and SH-101 and Jupiter no doubt. But the jx-03 doesn't let you, which is a massive waste and oversight to me.

My verdict on it after a few years of having it is unless you really really want that particular sound, or you are really short on space, I'd look elsewhere. Only thing really going for it is it does sound great for the money. But it's small and a bit limited. At some point I'll probably sell mine and get a minilogue instead.

doesn't look like that's the case on the JX-3P.

What sort of sound are you looking for? Personally I think it's a very underrated synth. It's got quite a wide sound pallet. It might not excel in one area but it has a proper Detroit / electro vibe to it.

For example I've read that Jeroen Search used it (original) a lot and I really like his sound.
Detroit, electro vibe is good :)

I have one. Doesn't have enough voices but can sound pretty good.
