Harangue the DJ _ Interview with Surgeon

Taken from the Guardian Guide on Saturday (26th June 2012) – by Sam Richards

(as you’ll see.. Tony has a good sense of humour!!)

The industrial techno stalwart and Dynamic Tension man empties the contents of his psychic record bag.

THE TRACK I’LL BE OPENING MY NEXT DJ SET WITH:

LINK _ John Coltrane – Psalm

It all depends whether I’m going to mix into the previous DJ’s last track or not. This is a really good way to wipe the slate clean.

THE TRACK I ALWAYS PLAY TO RESCUE A DANCEFLOOR:

LINK _ Traxmen – Wet Floor

Some old, raw Chicago house will bring things back again for sure.

THE TRACK THAT CURRENTLY GETS THE MOST REWINDS:

LINK _ Lone – Rapid Racer

After a few hours of deep, mental techno, this always raises the roof.

THE TRACK I’D PLAY AT MY AUNTIE’S WEDDING:

LINK _ Goldie Lookin’ Chain – Sister

If this fails, you’re in trouble. A much better choice than the inevitable Uptown Girl by Billy Joel..

THE BEST TRACK BY MY FAVOURITE NEW ARTIST:

LINK _ Blawan – Coronation

Jackin’ energy = dancefloor destruction.

THE TRACK I WISH I’D SIGNED TO MY LABEL:

LINK _ The Beatles – Strawberry Fields Forever

Cruelly kept from the No.1 spot by Englebert Humperdinck.

THE IDEAL FESTIVAL TRACK:

LINK _ Whitehouse – Wriggle Like A Fucking Eel

100% guaranteed hands-in-the-air massive tune.

THE TRACK I’D PLAY TO SHOW OFF MY ECLECTIC TASTES

LINK _ Chumbawamba – Tubthumping

Hi James!

THE TRACK THAT GOT ME OUT OF BED THIS MORNING:

LINK _ Russell Haswell – A Horde Of Flies Feast On A Rotting Pheasant Carcass

Never fails to get me out of bed in the morning.

THE TRACK I WISH I’D NEVER PLAYED:

LINK _ Perfume – Game

I played this a few years ago in Japan for a laugh, but it went down like a lead balloon. I realised afterwards that it was the equivalent of a Japanese DJ playing a Spice Girls song in their set at a UK gig.

THE TRACK I’D LIKE TO PLAY AT SUNSET IN IBIZA:

LINK _ Demis Roussos – Forever And Ever

This is so epic at any time of day, but at sunset in Ibiza – can you imagine that?

THE TRACK THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN A CROSSOVER HIT:

LINK _ Coil – Going Up

Haunting remake of the theme from Are You Being Served? This would always be in the pop charts in my world.

/END

Thanks to Ant for the heads up 🙂

Chumbawamba – Tubthumping

There's just something about that track that irritates me. Not even sure I could say what it is.

I hate it too.

Though there's a chance he knows them & they're sound people. Has to be an ironic choice.. but you wouldn't know either way 🙃

Whatever about some of the early electro-ish Girls Aloud tracks..

Always hated that Chumbawamba song, and I know why! I hate sing-along songs, the festival whoa whoa Elbows and Coldplays and Snow Patrols, and this one falls in the same category for me. Also the female vocals melody (pissing the night away) gets on my nerves. Anyway, our English underground football connection knew some of these guys, and I was told they indeed were nice chaps.
...
bugger, wanted to comment on the Whitehouse entry, but two hours past since that last sentence, saw a lecture on YT, sampled bits, and started a new track, and have to get up in six hours...
laterz then.
