Distortion is the same as compression in that the larger energy source will dominate the effect reaction, so the hats get crushed down when the kick is firing.
It is specifically the lows pushing the highs over the top, you can hear how the rides have fast tremolo like type gaps in them. I love pushing lows into distortions and brick walls for crazy distortion effects. It works nice with basses + noise too, where the highs just get pushed away.

Exactly, it's mainly the low-domination effect that makes this sounding so great making the top end content being crushed under the lows. Yummy

Distortion plugins I've seen the light

Post by msl »

So I've stated on here before that OTB distortion sucks generally, and even cheap guitar pedals sounds better and more alive than any plugin. That has now changed, I've been converted!

Been using Unfilteredaudio's Indent the last few days... my god its fucking amazing. On almost anything, individual sounds, drum bus, even mix bus... amazing on kicks, its a beast, it just sounds right, unlike so many other plugins I've tried.

Well worth the entry price, check it out.

Get with the program man, there are tons of really good distortions now, entering the heavy metal community educated me about that.

Yeah things have definitely gone forward the last few years, I first noticed with Soundtoys PrimalTap, the distortion circuit on it is simply amazing, they really nailed it, sounds so organic, so much so I use it mostly with the delay turned off!

But yeah was about time cause a lot of the ones that get branded about as being good (D16, Kombinat, etc) I thought sucked... anyway Indent is killer, gonna be all over all my productions its that impressive.

Kombinat can be quite good actually, the analog clipping and the fuzz are quite lively when you find the sweet spot. Its all about the way they interact with the filter.
D16s distortion is a bit poop though yeah.

Theres a thread where I listed a ton of amazing stuff.

Positive Grid are the best though.
Bias amp and bias FX are just amazing.

No, judging by their hardware bias amp pricing, I would say £200-£250.
Its bias pedal in a box essentially.

I downloaded the demo of indent. Cheers for the recommendation. I didn't think I needed another distortion plugin.. but after a few seconds of play, I was trying to justify not buying it.

Been reading up on the spec of dent.. the full spec version. Man.. it seems fucking incredible. Not sure whether to buy indent now or hold off for a possible dent sale.

Lovely sounding distortion.

Have a look at the Ignite stuff too. Their main site is down but the company designs and builds amps/units for heavy metal predominantly, then recreates them for free in VST/AU.

The anvil is probably my fave but they are all sound great for free IMO.

I remembered that distortion list and dug it out again - wasn't actually that easy to find, took me few queueries! I think that post should get moved in the archive forum so it's easier to find when this topic comes up again.

Yeah.
I have a few more to add to that. I'll go through my collection, I get sent new ones now and again since getting "accepted" in the metal community. Those guys are as obsessed with distortion as techno people are with kick drums and drum machines.

Its not a very good sounding distortion. Its a very typical early vst era digital distortion.

No love for Izotope Trash either? I find it a little one-dimensional but I could certainly see it up there with some of the better distortions around. Or U-He Saturn, for that matter. Great intuitive user interface, endless modulation and a few of the distortion models sound great.
