TSE R47 / Modeled on the Proco Rat distortion pedal

I have an original Rat box somewhere in storage. Bloody horrible little box is was, pure audio shred.
I've got the remake "dirty rat" and would say the same tbh. Also it creates to much noise for me, which is uncontrollable.

Rat pedals actually work best on bass.
A lot of bass players used to use them to get more attack, and they aren't producing lots of top so the rat is less haywire in the final output.

I think these have all been mentioned, but my favourites are:

- PSP vintage warmer
- D16 Decimort
- Voxengo tube amp

I've only gotten into using decimort more recently but it's becoming my go to plugin to add a bit of grit, adjusting the pre-amp knob I think it is, there's always a sweet spot that I'd rather have on most channels than not, great plugin.

Vintage warmer is great for a subtle effects as well as destroying things.

Not that I'd consider it a major distortion plug as such even though it can dirty up sounds, satson sonimus is a great plugin and I use it on every channel, the filters are excellent and great for rounding of sounds gently before an eq. For the price it's an absolute steal, the saturation is really musical and using the buss plugin adds a nice cohesiveness to the mix I find.

Hope that helps!

interested in this as well

I like and use fabfilter saturn but find I mostly scroll through presets and it is a bit deep and overwhelming to just tweak and dial in sounds. havent really spent too much time figuring it out though. would be interested in something else and I am kind of be interested in a simple outboard analog distortion unit. may try DIYing something.

have you looked into the Biscuit from OTO ?
fantastic little bitcrusher unit with FX on top, plus analog filter at the end of the signal path to round off some of the digital nastiness from the bitcrushing (or add extra nastiness).
can be used as a mono synth as well.

I really love that thing.
It's one of my favourite pieces of gear in the studio.

Is it really worth that price?

I think it is.
You got a great hardware bitcrusher with a perfect interface, 8 extra possible FX after your signal + analog filter.
And you can use it as a mono synth.
They are built like a tank and just pure instant fun to use.
You can just get so many different results with it, and use it on so many different signals.
Hell, sometimes I just use it for the drive and nothing else, like I would use a dirtier version of the gain on my mixer.
I think it's at least worth 350 to 400€,
I see its current price is around 500€, I honestly feel you'll soon enough forget that extra 100€.
This is gear produced by a small company, so naturally you won't find the cheap prices you pay for say something from Korg, or a mass produced guitar pedal.

I think this unit can easilly replace 2 or 3 good guitar pedals. And let's face it, you sometimes 150€ for a good guitar pedal as well.
(obviously you also have way cheaper ones, but I'm talking about the high end ones)

It's always a matter of taste with a lot of gear stuff, and whether it works for you.
So if software is your thing, then obviously there are far better and cheaper solutions for you out there, but if you're interested in getting something hardware for distortion (like xonetacular said for example), then I'll always recommend this unit.
I got a studio filled with hardware gear, some of it far more expensive than this thing, and yet this is definitely one of the most fun pieces of gear I have.

Did you check out the video's ?

and if you're really interested, why not get one from somewhere with a return policy ?
Or just sell it later on ebay. You'll find a buyer for sure.
Notice how you can only find new units for sale on ebay.
Apparantly the people who bought this thing seem quite happy with it. ;)

It's definitely on my radar. I've used the d16 decimort a lot previously and I think that this would make a nice addition to my set up. You don't see many second hand on eBay.

I received my dwarfcraft great destroyer last week and it is a nasty piece of work. Pure carnage. Great fun.

I just bought Izotope's Trash 2 since it's on sale for $149. I've been wanting this ever since it came out and I missed the last time it was on sale, so I finally pulled the trigger on it.

Yeah Ariff, it's really a nice plugin. Not as subtle as other plugins mentioned in this thread, but it's good at totally mangling your sound into something totally different.

tell me more !

why does the guy in this demo video seems to be high on codeïne or something ?
(and I'm not talking about the stupid sound FX they did in the edits)

youtu.be/GOaPqOZw5zI

where did you get your unit ?
when checking this thing out it doesn't seem like many stores in Europe have it in stock.
