Yo Subcunts,

A year or so ago I read about phantom distortion on the forum. I can still find the topic but I dont get how you achieve the sound.

Can I get a walkthrough of the poroces, something to do with kicks and hats and energy an busses.

Thanks 8-)

Hi cunt

It's very easy to do once you actually figure it out.

Here's how I do it in live.

1. Create track A (kick pattern) and B (Porc pattern)
2. Duplicate track A and call it C.
3. Group A and B together and apply the right amount of distortion (so 11)
4. Copy/paste the distortion plug in on track C. It has to be exactly the same. Then apply a utility plug in on the same trck, and click on Phz-L and Phz-R so you phase invert the kick.

If you want to have the clean version of the kick working with the distorted percs, create an audio track take the audio from the kick and put it on "pre fx", enable monitor in and there you go.

Then it's all about experimenting but i'm sure you already know that 8-)

Wow that was easy thanks. So im using 3 tracks now for one sound if im correct, so yeah bouncing it to audio will be handy.

it's HERE you heathens

phantom distortion is MINE

and it shall now been known as "Ozias Leduc's Phantom Distortion TM"

okay i call this phantom distortion, and it's good for rougher techno

one way to have drums (or anything) interact in an gritty/aggressive way is to bus them together and apply overdrive. eg, bus your kick and your Porc together, then put an overdrive on the bus. the effect isn't completely unlike the sidechain method; the Porc gets eaten by your kick (although in a nastier way)

however, this makes a mess of your kick and isn't always desirable

but we can have a totally clean kick distort your percussion (or whatever) if we additionally have a second bus , and set them up like this:

bus 1 - kick and Porc are fed into it, has overdrive plugin
bus 2 - as above, except that the kick ALONE is fed into it

now we phase invert bus 2 (if using ableton utility plugin , click PHZ-L and PHZ-R) to subtract the distorted kick and voila - we have the kick's devastating effect on the percussion; yet the kick itself has disappeared and can be routed elsewhere!

it's also handy to have a third bus to go between these 2 and the master

there is plenty of room to experiment with this technique also. assigning midi knobs to both distortion plugins with slightly different parameter ranges can lead to interesting results

I`ve never really done this, I`ve always used a different workaround.

Gonna try this as I`m doing a lot of distortion on real drums for my album.

i actually just came up with it because i did an "industrial hardcore" sample pack and was trying to find a way where the user could put things together and still have it sound like it was all saturated-to-fuck together (ie kick smashing the rides etc)

Yeah, that was always a secret weapon in the warehouses for me. Wait `till everyone is really really fucked up, and then throw it on, watch the creeping fear and paranoia.
Was especially good when we did a party in a old factory that manufactured bondage gear.

Overdrive on a bus? Sounds like a bunch of time travel jibber jabber to me.

Going to make a Combo for this, because phase inverting stuff in old Reason is a
pain in the behind.
