Rest has been covered I think.
Both very entertaining to watch!
I haven't watched La Casa De Papel yet, but plan to do so,
however, "Dark"...
If all goes well (=if we don't both fall asleep 10 minutes after we put the kids to bed),
we should watch the 2nd part of the last episode this evening (yeah, when you can watch the final episode of a series in 2 sessions, it says a lot about fatigue or about the series or both
)
Anyway, I've been meaning to write about Dark ever since we did decide to continue watching it.
I have extremely mixed feelings about Dark, but most certainly only 30% or so are positive.
Dark
could have been really great.
Some things I couldn't help noticing :
*I think the scenario is pretty damn
good for the most part,
but it was SOOOOOOOOOOOO badly told. Good idea, but so badly executed.
I mean, time traveling stuff always gets extremely complex very soon, so I can understand it's difficult. But fuck me... To give you an example : at one point they end an episode with showing pics from each character in 1953, 1986 and 2019, just so the viewer can
get it.
Really... couldn't they have done it some other way ? Like giving each of them some typical "tic" or some form of behavior that makes it very easy for the viewer to recognize them ? Or, as is the case with 1 main character, a huge scar on his face ? There are so many options to do this. They didn't use any of them, and then "helped" the viewer in 1 episode, and then went total berserk again, leaving you all the time thinking "who the fuck was that again ??"
*Why do they seem to think the main way to show people it's 1986 again is to show them a Raider instead of a Twix ? (I know they used other stuff as well, but after like the 4th or 5th time of that Raider joke, you can't help but wonder if a Raider/Twix was the
only snack they knew/know in Germany)
*Why did ALL the women had to look like they are all a bunch of totally depressed horribly "out-lived" cunts ?? I mean, there was literally 1 single person of the female species that looked pretty (hell, even ok would have been nice, and I'm not even talking about just looks, I'm talking about radiating (pun intended, yes sir !) any form of positive energy), so yeah, what a surprise when that turns out to be the one who does the "show tits for no reason" thing...
Admittedly most men looked like they could do with a lot of Xanax or some great E just as well, but they did come across, in general, as being a lot better off than the women...
Ow wait, I remembered a 2nd female character that didn't look like they would kill themselves any moment, but that's still quite a depressingly low number.
*the color filters, just fucking everywhere, all the time.
*the SOUNDTRACK !!!! My god, there was a "ZWWWWWEEEEEEEOOOONNNGGGGGG" sound going on like every fucking 5 seconds. I mean, my mrs and I don't even refer to the series as "Dark", we just say "hey, are we gonna watch another zwwweeeeeeoooooonnnnggggg" tonight ? I have literally
never heard a soundtrack that was so much "in your face". For me, it ruins pretty much all the fun of watching Dark.
It could be different for non musicians, it probably is, but that shit was just too much. I'd almost think it's better to be the great grand child of Trump than to be in any way related to the composer of that soundtrack.
*Perhaps a small thing, but raised by my mrs : when the story is already complicated. Why do they put in certain characters that are totally unnecessary in any way ? There's quite a few small side paths of the scenario that just don't add any extra content to the story at all.
*Perhaps another small detail, but there is not a single person in Dark that lives in an apartment. Anyone who's ever been in Germany long enough knows that is extremely unlikely.
All in all, this show
could have been so great, but I found watching it massively frustrating.
I was happy with every positive thing I saw :
some of the plot twists about X finding out he's just been having a thing with his aunt, and many other situations like that. Some of the decors which were really really great. The acting which was all VERY well, tbh,...
But I would have never continued to watch it if it wasn't for my mrs and because the show was German.
