just curious
here in switzerland getting work/money is quite easy.
i do freelance exhibition/event construction.
couldent work in a 100% job, would feel like a prison to me..

I'm a User Experience designer. I really enjoy my work, and the sector I work in, so it's not a prison for me!

Mastering Studio.
Spent years building the business doing mastering work and freelance audio work (mixing, guest lecturing, tutoring, sound engineering, audio consulting and installation) and invested a shit load of money in a new purpose built place 2 years ago as workload was growing and now it's a full time job.

Prototype Engineering

Digital marketing, though been unemployed for 10 months. This year's been a shit year.

Dubbing Mixer and Sound Designer Full time.
Used to do (and still do) carpentry and all round general builder works

Barman. Actually, I've got it pretty good. Don't have to fuck with cocktails since it's a beer bar, and my schedule is flexible enough that i can work on tunes a couple days a week.

Nothing. Really difficult to get a job in Finland, unless you're at the top of your game in your job.

Even people like lawyers have difficult times. My ex girlfriend is one and she was just unemployed for 3 months. Sent like 30-40 applications, got only 4 or 5 interviews and every job had about 50 other lawyers applying, meaning that to get a job you have to be in the top 2% of the all the other lawyers. And she's not from out of school, she's a good lawyer with 5 years of work experience.

3 months is of course not THAT much. I've been unemployed for 2,5 years now. Sent maybe 200 applications, got about 3 interviews, no job. Pretty much given up. I should re-educate myself, but due to some smart moves by the government, it's getting a lot harder to get even accepted in schools and it's more expensive now due to them making it more loan-based, instead of the government supporting people who want to educate themselves.

On top of that, someone somewhere got this great idea that one of Finland's problems (ie. what they teach in colleges hasn't got much to what potential employers are looking for) can be remedied by making the shools easier, so that there are more people with professional degrees. Obviously, this is the exact opposite of what should have been done.

My professional degree took 3 years. I learned basically nothing of worth, the whole school could have been condensed into about 2 months. Now I have a degree and when I look at the jobs available matching my degree, half of the time I just don't have the required chops to do the job. The other half of the time I don't even understand what the chops are. I mean, the job application is namedropping different skills needed and I don't even know what those words mean.

Jesus, had no idea things were so hard in Finland. I did the longterm unemployed thing too. It's difficult not to doubt yourself after such a long time. I dabbled with the idea of going back to college but I reckon it's just not my thing and it's gone the same way as you describe (come out riddled with debt and still not sure of a decent job after it).

I value experience more so, if I have any advice to give, it would be to get involved in things that might add to that and work towards whatever it is that you want to do, even if it's just an hour here or there. It all adds up and gives you some focus and motivation and you see first hand different aspects to be aware of.
I also find it's better to be involved with others as it's easier than doing things for yourself (but it's different for everyone). Things tend to work out though so don't panic.
Finding an employer with similar values can really help so, if you don't hear back, take it as a good thing! ..

Wow, a lot of technological jobs here. I'm a social scientist and do counselling for victims of right wing attacks, no technology at all.

Programming/Databases/Admin/System architect/etc., no formal education, continuously employed for 20+ years. Artsy humanist autodidact aspie tech geek.

idk, things aren't that hard now in Finland tbh.

I'm an ICT specialist. It's ok, wish I was a marine biologist researching whale songs somewhere around the equator tho.
