By day - Electronics Engineer, working for 'the man'. At night my hobby is designing and building synths and noisy stuff, thinking about making money with it one day...

Also in the technology game - I work for a big multinational engineering consultancy, in a division that's consistently dysfunctional/mismanaged. Which means I don't actually do that much at work or have much skill/experience to show for the amount of time I've been there, which is a double-edged sword really :) apart from there being a lot of (mostly pointless) travel it's an alright setup for purusing music alongside all in all.

In a way I'm kinda stuck - not really got the CV for a more challenging engineering role unless it's back at entry level nor the time/desire for such a thing, but it's definitely better paid and easier than a bar job or something so...

No, I'm about as productive in completing things as I am as a techno producer!

Depends of course a bit on your education and stuff. For me things are difficult, 10 years ago I could find a job in a week any time.

I'd like to re-educate myself, but it's a lot harder now than before, especially if you want a have an education which can actually lead to a job.

I can but only disagree with every ounce of fibre in my body.

I learnt my entire skillset on the web for free. (And am still learning!)

There are many skills you can learn on the web for free that will give you real opportunities for employment.

Edit: My housemate too, who earns great money, dropped out of college and learnt his skills all on Google and Stack Exchange. For free. He now is in massively high demand and gets paid very well for a dude who's barely 25!

He is a linux sysadmin.

I agree with that. Especially in IT. Scoring the first job is not too easy but once you got some experience on your resume it gets a lot easier

That might work for some super smart or talented people, but:

1) You make it sound like it's easy. If it'd be easy for me, it'd be easy for everyone else as well. Basically, unemployment wouldn't exist.

2) I have an education and work experience but it's still almost impossible to even get a job interview, let alone a job (even a minimum wage kinda shit job). Every job has like 200-500 applicants, there's always someone better and if you have no degree, no experience your CV will look something like "I watched some youtube videos of this stuff but I know my shit, please believe me".

3) I'm not smart or talented. I'm pretty much only good for repetitive manual labour kinda jobs and even those are really difficult to land.

I don't know dude, I think if you're smart enough to figure out how to make a house/techno track, you're more than smart enough for even middle weight IT roles. It's seriously not hard stuff, and you shouldn't talk yourself down.

In fact, I'd wager a bet that most manual labourers are "smarter" (however you quantify that) than most people you meet in an office.

I, for one, am not "super smart or talented" - and I once caught my housemate moments from eating rice he left out on the side all night.

The reason you don't see everyone doing this is a effort vs dedication vs perseverance thing. It's a lot easier to sit on the couch and watch TV than it is to teach yourself, say, a new language.

In all honesty, I think learning to read, speak and spell a 2nd language probably takes the same amount of brain power, if not is harder, than learning to write code.

The tools are out there dude, but only you can walk the path!

Or if you want to work with hands, become an electrician. There's not a country on Earth that isn't crying out for electricians.

Well you can't really become an electrician on your own. At least over here you need a license for that and most get that from school. Maybe it's possible to just take the license test and study on your own. Then again, it's super illegal to do electrician work on your own over here, so how do you practice? I don't think a friend who builds a house is gonna let you do the electric work there cos it's very likely that both of you will be in deep trouble after that.

I actually do have some electrician training, though not the full degree or the license. Electrician work is very stressful cos you're working with lethal voltage all the time and a mistake can cost either your or someone else's life.

I wouldn't mind a challenging job, but I don't like stress or handle it well. I've more or less given up in life and just accepted that I'll be unemployed for the rest of my life.

Idk what its like in Finland but in the UK there are many agencies who will fund your course to get your licence and training.

Ow come on now. Normal electricity here in Belgium is 220 to 230 volt,
I am not an electrician, but my friend has the license (as an extra for his current job) and the electrician who redid everything in my house is a good friend of mine and he always laughs with "normal" (=low) current.
I've had it at least 4x that I had 220 through my body, and both the people I just mentioned must have had it happen like 20 to 30x. It's a horrible feeling, but unless you have some sort of heart disease, it won't harm you in any way if it's only for a few seconds.

Let me ask you something : how many times do you read about people getting electrified in their house because of bad wiring ? Pretty much never, exactly !
Fire because of short circuit shit or something, that you hear of once in a while, but people getting electrified from 220 to 230 volt ? Almost never happens here in Belgium.

I'll let you in on a secret : I can't stand stress myself either. I fucking hate it.
I simply have trouble dealing with too many impulses,
and I should say that I am blessed, or should I say cursed,
with a hyperactive brain...
I just got back from a family weekend, and literally half an hour before I left on friday, I discovered that my furman power conditioner in my studio stopped working, so all the time while being around my big and noisy family, I had this nagging thing at the back of my head "what if it's more than just the furman", and no way to find out...

I think stress is a completely underestimated source of a LOT of trouble in our current society.
Tons of companies seem to only have just enough employees to keep things running, while overdriving every single one of them, so as soon as even 1 person gets sick, work gets behind on schedule everywhere...
That's a sign there's something seriously wrong...

But to say you've come to accept you'll stay unemployed for the rest of your life...
I have bookmarked the links to coding mr Plyphon has given above,
and though I never thought I'd be good at stuff like this, (which is why I never tried that shit before),
I figured, why not give it a try for a few days/weeks,
at least for the free part of those sites.
So tomorrow I'll slowly give it a try and see where it goes...

Reinvent yourself and stop complaining.

Bad wiring leads more to house fires than direct electrocution.

Anyway, work's a total cunt. If it was fun, they wouldn't have to pay us to turn up and do some trivial rubbish day in, day out.

But stress is separate from work. It's a mental construct. I can't say ignore it, but learn to deal with it....
