Why do my friends think I'm a DJ?

Why do all my friends keep calling me a DJ? If I produce Techno then I'm a DJ? I don't even know how to DJ!! no discs, no jockying just drum machines and synths.
Has the line become so blurred that a producer / DJ is now just a DJ? Should I just learn how to DJ then pay you guys to ghost write all my tracks?
Then I can say to all my friends "Look!! I DJ'd so hard last night that new grooves started carving they're way into the vinyl I was playing!"

Friendly version of what I was about to...

But, I fear they're not dumb. The public image of what a DJ is has been shaped by the Aokis, Skrillexes etc long enough. Nobody gives a shit what a DJ does these days, really.

Then again nobody gives a shit about what the POTUS should do either. So.

@sonome - did you ever ask them why they think you're a DJ?

What type of DJ are they calling you though?

It could be Drill Jig. Maybe they've installed a camera in your toilet & forgot to zoom out

Next time you see an old lady knitting, remember that in her head she's cursing you and saying "Why's everyone saying I'm knitting? Just cos I have needles and wool?.. Don't they know what crotchet is?"

I think your right, My friend just explained that if she see someone making music with electronic equipment she sees it as DJing... Soooo that's what we are! Not producers apparently.

+1 for Deceptive Jamming!

I think that what people who don't understand it think is a DJ, unless your name is something like Dave Johnson, in that case they are just being nice.

Not all people are "Techno Smart" they think a DJ makes music. Probably cause the chain smokers are DJ's and make there own little electronic parts. But that's probably why

hmmmm, 'The Chain Smokers' ? - are not DJ's and make nothing... Pop music mannequins, radio fodder. Pain to the ears and soul.
That kind of thing should not even be referenced around here.

i'm no fan of the Chain Smokers, but they do DJ and they do make their own tracks. Up to a point at least, it is on US radio so it has final engineering/mixing my proper pros. I've looked at/listened to their music to get the music theory behind it. intentional or not, the music theory is pretty interesting. but i agree it is trite music for clothes shops.

I get this. I also used to get asked to do house parties and Nan's 60th because somehow I'm "into all that, the decks and stuff".

Sure, I can start off with some drone then a bit of a Autechre and Coil to speed things up. Loads of Basic Channel when most people are through the doors and then Axis pounders at +6 for the last two hours.

problem is that DJ'ing became so widely spread nowadays.

I'm gonna sound like an old and grumpy cunt, but I guess that's just one of these almost unavoidable things when you get older...
When I started DJ'ing, I was 15, and the only reason I started DJ'ing was because from all the people in my year of high school I simply had the biggest music collection.

Nowadays, if my neighbor's cleaning lady's cat has 5 new kittens,
4 of those will be a "DJ" by next week, and 3 of those will have their own youtube channel and a mixcloud account.
Digital technology has made things easier than ever, and people can get their MP3's for free from the wonderful www.

So no wonder people associate producers with DJ's.
I mean, let's face it, if you want to make a living off your music in techno country,
it usually means you gotta DJ almost every weekend.
The two got so much intertwined with each other most "normal" people can't even tell the difference any more.
It's almost as if it takes balls to just be only a producer and not a DJ as well.

After not having DJ'ed for maybe 10 years, I bought myself a controller last year.
Still haven't used it one single time, just because I'm afraid I'll lose too much time with it.
Time I would otherwise use for making my own music instead of playing someone else's tracks.
But I loved DJ'ing, and my music collection is far bigger now than when I used to DJ so many years,
so yeah, when I do restart making mixes, it's gonna be fun, that much I'm sure of. :)
