Recommend great/outstanding techno albums...
Recently I ve been listening to some techno Lps, but I ve found that all of them sound very lame and boring, they seem to be just a bunch of tracks compiled together.
Is there any artist that still works on the concept of albums? (Develops a story or a context around several tracks)
For example: Kangding Ray - Solens Arc
Thanks!!
Would be great something different from Aphex Twin..

I hear Jeff Mills has a concept for an album.
I have no idea what that concept is though..............

I mean by concept, storytelling. Something that keeps you hooked by following each track.jordanneke wrote:I hear Jeff Mills has a concept for an album.

That`s tough, I almost don`t consider any Techno albums to be albums. They are all just extended EP`s to me.
Surgeons breaking the frame probably stands out as a genuine album to me.

Re: Recommend great/outstanding techno albums...
Techno people don't seem to take on the album concept as much as they used to. Still some decent ones out there though. In terms of recent releases there has been a few I've enjoyed:
Octave One - Love by Machine, released pretty recently, strongly tied together in an artistic sense in that it is all done on the setup they use for their live shows. So it takes some stylistic twists and turns, but clearly all comes from the same starting point. Quite enjoyable imo, as are all their albums to be fair.
Planetary Assault Systems - Arc Angel, from last year, a case of nailing a sound and running with it - spacey techno from start to finish, no stand out tracks, but the whole thing actually works for me, very trance inducing and I've enjoyed it from start to finish a fair few times, so to me at least it works as an album.
DJ Bone has a new one out as of this weekend (as Differ-Ent) that I haven't got yet, but the clips sound good.
My all time favourites include:
Drexciya!!!
The two CJ Bolland ones from the mid 90s, that weren't really techno at all, but pretty expansive electronic explorations
The Advent - Elements of Life (now available on Bandcamp for those who lost the record - like me)
And probably my two favourite techno albums, that really work in that format and even have a warped sort of narrative - The Mind Control of Candy Jones and The Art Lukm Suite by Holy Ghost. Don't know if these are available to listen to online anywhere, but well worth a check.

I love that record but it's just a collection of kickin' DJ tracks, isn't it?Mono-xID wrote:

There's a lot of bad albums in techno but also some really, really good ones. I'm going to defend the techno album a bit here and post a few random classics from my collection that have a clear theme throughout.
I love most of the Deepchord/Echospace albums. The Coldest Season and Liumin are among my favorite records ever.
Shed has some good albums, Shedding The Past is a classic.
Convextion.
B12.
154 - Strike.
John Beltran - Ten Days Of Blue.
Minilogue - Blomma.
The 7th Plain.
Porter Ricks - Biokinetics.
Acronym - June. Came out pretty recently but the best techno album in years, IMO.
Robert Hood - Nighttime World Series.
Sandwell District - Feed Forward.

Re: Recommend great/outstanding techno albums...
I don't really care what it is. All I know is that there is no filler on that record and every track stood the test of time and still leaves dance floors crashed when played at the right time.dubdub wrote:I love that record but it's just a collection of kickin' DJ tracks, isn't it?Mono-xID wrote:

This record is my personal blueprint of how techno should be.
I'd take this LP over albums with slowed down atmospheric "home listening techno album with drone/ambient filler tracks" any day.

From back in the day..
Speedy J – Public Energy No.1
C.J. Bolland – Electronic Highway
Polygon Window – Surfing On Sine Waves
Falls into the straight up techno category, but an album full of good techno regardless
Steve Stoll – The Blunted Boy Wonder

SHXCXCHCXSH - SsSsSsSsSsSs and Linear S Decoded
Kangding Ray - Solens Arc as already mentioned but possibly also Hyper Opal Mantis
Arpanet - Inertial Frame, has a lot of tracks that contain similar ideas/soundstyles
Demdike Stare - Elemental, unlike their testpressing releases but an album of a different style with a cohesive sound and not just a collection of tracks that could be split up in EPs
Gesloten Cirkel - Submit X
