Hans Zimmer Masterclass
Re: Hans Zimmer Masterclass
another John Barry one.
One of my favorite pieces to play on piano (though of course an adapted arrangement).
Some times you can really tell if a piece is great if you can adapt it from a whole orchestra to piano solo and the piece will still sound absolutely great.
A real fucking shame John Barry died.
I'm not saying Hans Zimmer is bad (not at all), but John Barry is way better if you ask me.
(pay no attention to the stupid video's of course)

I actually read the book of this film, and was once in Kopenhagen for a few days, and visited the estate of Karen Blixen (not that far from Kopenhagen)
She was one hell of a woman all right, lived the last several years of her life on medical speed.

And now a switch to the absolute master, Ennio Morricone.
The "maestro" wrote the soundtracks of more than 100 films (and counting).
How on earth one can have so much music coming out of you is a total mystery to me...

if you've never seen a so called spaghetti western, you should really start with that one.
I hadn't watched one for years, I always thought it was a stupid and cheap genre.
And in a way it was, because they made westerns for a far cheaper budget than the US ones.
But fuck me, Once Upon a Time In The West is a fantastic film.

and now to cater your cheesy needs...
This soundtrack is a very old favorite of mine.
I like 90% of Tim Burton's films, and yeah, I totally love Danny Elfman.

Re: Hans Zimmer Masterclass
I used to have this sheet music somewhere, but I lost it.
I loved playing this on sight (never bothered to properly learn it).
It sounds a LOT better if you play it WAY slower.
My favorite piece to play when I was semi-drunk.

Re: Hans Zimmer Masterclass
one of my all time favorite soundtrack composers is Angelo Badalamenti.
My love for this guy went so far that I once had all his favorite synths in my studio.
Sold all of them except for one, and it's not really getting used a lot either.
unfortunately, this one is bad sound quality

the piano part that starts from around 0:58 I had once written out for me.
I love playing it, because of how fragile he finally enters into Laura Palmer's theme (which everybody knows)
(btw the pad from Laura Palmer's theme is just a preset of the Korg 01r/w, if anyone reading this cares to know)

Re: Hans Zimmer Masterclass
totally love this film (even more than Lost Highway),
and my god what a soundtrack...
beautiful synths in there. One hell of a dark trip.

It puts a smile on my face when I see that youtube suggests me a video where the film is explained.
Once saw it at the end of a very trippy night, and totally got the whole film.

I could go on forever
so I'll end with this one from Badalamenti,
once carried my sisters coffin on this track, so yeah...
(but hey, I picked the music myself, so no complaints there)

That's because they usually use the same cheap tricks to "command" the feelings of the viewer.TimBuys wrote: Lot's of the more recent big budget hollywood soundtracks just sound really simular and uninspired to me (but mabye that's just me!).
It sounds uninspired because it IS uninspired. It's just formulaic repetition crap.
Pay no attention to it, just dig into the old classics. Tons of great stuff to be found there.
Most techno and house has extremely simple melodies.TimBuys wrote:I can at least try to write good harmonic and melodic content step by step. It's never a waste of time to spend time on your hobby. Some techno producers that I like (which will probably not be considered techno by some here) have simple melodies aswell.
Hell, pretty much most genres have simple melodies if you compare them with classical music,
and a lot of the better soundtracks were written for a symphonic orchestra.

Re: Hans Zimmer Masterclass
Ah, those Angelo Badalamenti tracks are definitely amazing. Especially the Fred's World (Lost Highway OST); very dark, just the way I like it! Please point me to someone who doesn't know the once upon a time in the west soundtrack though .
I am ashed to say I never saw Twin Peaks but I know everyone holds it in very high esteem. Will check that series out somewhere in the near future .
Thanks for sharing those!

Fred's World is extremely easy to play,
and the sound is just a JX10 preset called "soundtrack"

Re: Hans Zimmer Masterclass
All things considered, 90 bucks isnt a lot of cash. I have thought about getting the Zimmer masterclass, as well as Sorkin's screenwriting class. Might not be the same as a college degree, and definitely not something exactly in my field of interest, but as a DJ/aspiring producer and film/tv editor, those two classes might be worth hearing.
Besides, its always possible to get with a couple of friends and take the class together, thus paying a fraction of the price.

Yeah for sure man, I just hope he goes into depth on a lot of stuff. At the very least it will be inspiring to get a bit closer to his thought process!
