Facebook/self promotion

Post by Mslwte »

Something I need to get off my chest is that Facebook is really starting to piss me off. It's just a fkn spam fest. You have unknown djs and producers spamming other unknown djs producers which is pointless IMO. You also get added to groups without being asked, guys posting their tracks to every single shitty group without getting any likes or its their same friends liking them each time. I have also fallen into this trap. Its shameful. Whats the fkn point? It's pure desperation and forcing your music on to other people, to get friends and likes etc on your pages, it's to massage peoples egos or something? And most of the time the music is shite! Surely if your music is good enough you wouldn't need to spam the fk out the net? I've seriously thought about what the hell I'm trying to do at the moment, and I know what I'm doing this all wrong.

Before I thought to myself that I need to get as many friends on the net as I can get into as many groups on Facebook and soundcloud and spam the music that I am making, but surely if the music is good enough people will come to me? Im certainly looking at things from a different perspective ATM. Social networking is a great way of getting yourself out there but it should be left for people to find you. And if there not finding you them your not good enough. You don't see the very best forcing it on people, probably because they are to busy working!

There's all these digital labels will to give you a contract at the drop of a hat and it's no real achievement, is it. I think now that if my music isnt good enough to get signed by a "proper" label with a proper roster, then it shouldn't be out there at all. I then need to work harder to get my music to that standard. Concentrating on the music isnt the only thing it's the whole package. Your attetion to detail, identity and individuality is what is important. Quality over quantity.

The artwork of those digital labels is awful. It may not be a physical product at the end of the day - but it certainly would never make me want to buy something.

big problems for facebooks groups is they make suggestion for people to add to the groups. it is very hard not to stop pressing the little buttons. i now am conditioned to press like buttons and other things. they have a big evil plan and need us to do it for them hehehe

its true i think. i think thats why a lots of people are noticing that they are added to surprise groups without knowing it. half peoples problem and half facebook problem.

The adding to groups inviting to events is becoming more of an issue with people. I see more and more complaints each day.

I'm encouraged to spam my podcast in groups etc but don't like doing it anymore. I also have my own group which i moderate. If a post does not have any comments or like after a day it gets taken down. Or if it's just pure spam or crap.

I think its changed recently though, hasnt it? I get those suggestions of who to add to the group from my friend list. Before, you had to add / invite them.

Didnt use to be that way. Its a new development with FB for sure. I've very reluctant to do it now, even for someone that I know would be interested.

+1 for Spam. Theres a fine line though.. Trying to have a relationship / laugh / unique & acknowledging message is a must.

Just out of respect.

Facebook self promoting annoys the crap out of me, some people just don't understand the concept of spamming and how counter productive it actually is, a certain amount of self promotion is grand and I've heard some nice stuff through clicking the odd link posted on Facebook, but some people need to relax with it.

posting stuff on your own wall is one thing, but posting stuff onto 15 different groups and pages etc is just taking the piss. if you post on your own wall people have the choice to just delete you if it is annoying.

I dunno - I think its worse if you dont participate in the group a little.. or know some of the people etc..

I think if people get used to seeing names & you posting with friends etc.. then its not as bad. But there are layers to it & the deeper you go, the worse it is of course.

Its a poisoned chalice anyway - cos EVERYONE is on FB.. so what do you do?

At least you have a conscience James. Think thats important to have the balance.

I have friends that spam the fuck out of facebook, from girls with duckface pics every few mins to promoters posting podcasts, labels, clubnights etc. It gets to the stage that I either block or unsubscribe from these people, i have not shared a track/mix on facebook in over six months, because i dont want to be seen like this.
There are sites like soundcloud mixcloud etc especially for this, if people like your fanpage thats fine, "normal" people dont want to hear about your new tune every twenty minutes, they like x factor and shit like that.
This is not directed at anybody in particular, just in general.

I agree with much here. The spam these days is just terrible and nearly unbearable.
I'd say you can spam. And you can politely advertise.
More people should politely advertise instead of spam.

usually i promote my tracks the first few days on my wall and a few close friends wall then post my track in corresponding fb groups im in that i also post regularly in, other than that I leave it up to the rare soundcloud fans that scour through page after page to find good stuff. mattias puts it well politely advertising. I'd rather not post my tracks to all my friends on fb that would just take an absurd amount of my time that I don't want to do

I promote sin releases on farcebook when they come out. Normally 3 times per release. A promo video, then the release on release day, then an update some time later for the Bandcamp release, which is always cheaper.

That's it really. Our release schedule is usually on a rolling 6 week basis, so it never gets to spam levels.

I do question some of these labels where there seems to be a release a week, such as the gynoid, electrax etc group which does get to spam levels, and I tend to think if a label or person is throwing lots of releases out all the time then maybe there isn't enough care and attention being paid to each release, so I ignore.

We all need to promote, but I think it can be done with some taste and discretion.
