Do You One Two?

Post by surface »

So, what's people's opinion on dubstep?
For me it was a breath of fresh air for a minute but i think the high point was Martyn's great lengths release.
It seems every tom, dick and dirty harry is riding on the dubstep train these days but the guys that were on point are going back to making good old 4/4 techno.

Only reason I ask is cos I awas watching these yt clips which Rusko did for computer music and wasn't sure where to paste them.
I found it pretty interesting though.
He's a straight talking head and he's got an approach similar to what i'd do ..

Tbh I liked both benga and burial's albums and thought it was a very interesting genre a few tears ago but now dubstep is too big and comercial the true dubstep has been completely ripped off and over hyped

Well theres some nice dubstep for sure. However I'd say it was better before, pre the time the American producers came to destroy it.

I can't handle dubstep. I tried to listen to it, but it makes me very nervous for some reason :(

Dubstep has exploded and grown so quickly, and has become so diverse now (much more so than techno which has gone the other way and become narrower and narrower), it is hard to pin it down as being anything.

I would say Rusko in that video is a maker of the more cliche side of dubstep, but things have split up so much that now the new term Bass Music is being used to umbrella the various sounds of dubstep.

You have stuff like Randomizer and Blawan, giving a more uk garage and techno take on it, then you have the big wobble cliche stuff from rusko etc that sits close to grime, you got the real pure and clean dub style of 2562 (and Monolake to an extent), and T++, there`s the real experimental stuff, the crossover tech stuff, the industrial stuff, and then the bro-step/ popstep of skrillex etc.

I`m actually far more interested in Bass Music than techno at the moment as there is more freedom and more acceptance of diversity, whereas techno is mostly split into the Whoretits?-esque minimal camp, the clubby minimal of Sellout and liebing, or the more pretencious side of Berghein.

I'll listen to dubstep but my ears open up somewhere between Burial, Untold and Scuba.

Rusko is a bit too Radio 1 for me, but props for doing a couple of vids for computer music. Just goes to show that you dont need all the gear in the world to make decent tracks.

Most stuff on Hotflush and Hessle Audio is sick. Skrillex etc.. may be quite technical with all the cuts ups etc.. but I prefer groove and depth.

picked this up today and I like it . But like V said its such a broad genre now , like techno , with a lot of different styles , so there is a lot of garbage out there , but some great stuff too .

really like that objekt track. listened to some t++, more blawan, and andy stott on youtube recently and some of it's just amazing.

the stuff i tend to like most seems to be a flat mix of simplicity and awesome. not simplicity as in easy to make, but as in has a very clear agenda with not a lot of subtext.
