Timo Maas

Post by Wiu »

Just wondering if anyone happened to read the interview with Timo Mass in the July issue of Future Music. No idea what the guy (or his producer) is making these days, but for someone that is very open about using someone to produce his tracks I was surprised that he was actually in the magazine.

I just find it rather ridiculous that someone can have such an awesome studio but then just sit back and let someone else do most of the work. I know this subject has been covered in other threads in the past but I was just surprised to read it really and was wondering what other people thought.
Thank you for the laughs, debate, new music found, production tips etc etc over the years. I wish Subsekt and everyone all the best for the future. Wiu.

I've got the mag and I read a little bit of the interview. I was interested in what gear they were using tbh. I think it is worse when the producer tries to hide the fact someone else has produced for them but I got the feeling they were equal in the partnership. I know timo used to work closely with martin buttrich in the late 90's.

Yeah I knew he'd used Martin Buttrich in the past. But several times he makes reference to not really doing much hands on stuff and just wanting to get his ideas out. The fastest way for him to do this is to use a producer.

"I don't want to keep up with software and the hardware that's constantly coming out. The music was always the most important thing for me...."

"I feel that when I'm sat on the computer trying things out, I'm losing my ideas. I can't get them down fast enough so that's why I work with other people and I can explain, describe and talk through a whole arrangement before we even touch a computer."

I agree, it's always interesting to see/hear what people use in the studio. But with Timo HE isn't using it. He's describing what he wants and letting someone else do it for him. I guess it's that he's so open about it that annoys me. I just hope his producers get a decent percentage of any money made.

never get why people do this, its stupid, so essentially he sits in there and hums a tune and makes kick drum sounds to some ghost producer, the fact that he doesnt try and hide that is a bit odd, id be embarrassed explaining that to people if that was my role in the music making process of my tracks.

id rather spend years and years pulling my hair out trying to make decent tunes, then put my name to a release i didnt really make.

fair enough if your new to making tracks and trying to get your head around the music making process of a particular DAW with more experienced producers, but actually releasing tracks under your name that you really havent done anything on :?

I think he's always been fairly open about this- so I guess it's better than lying. Anyway, I saw the promo vid for this pop into my youtube feed and he is literally doing nothing. What's he saying to him anyway? How do you communicate a sound you have in your head?

Lol @ the tender moment where he holds a mic for the producer.

It`s a double whammy of disappointment and shitwank.
Both these people who use ghost producers to put their name on music to get them gigs, and credibility etc.
AND the stupid whores who work as ghost producers for participating in the bullshit.

As for Timo. Well, admitting you are a turd, doesn`t stop you from smelling like shit.

@ Planar - I wasn't gonna bother watching the video. After seeing that though I might have to if only to see how bad it is. I love the way the guy is getting into the track, and Timo's just kind of sat there looking like he wants to cut someone.

Seriously though, I wouldn't be able to work with someone sitting behind me shouting random stuff every now and again. I like my personal space.

If he ever learns how to make music, he might end up using "his own" samples without realising they were his, having no recollection of ever making them.

That track in the clip is SOOOO similar to a track that Buttrich produced for someone else 6 or 7 years ago

I like some of that old "wet & hard" techno that was a thing for about 10 minutes. Der Schieber 2 I'd quite happily play today.

:D "Wet and hard", remember getting a Ministry mag mixed by Corvin Dalek with that title. Didn't last long as a gnre. This though, is one of my favourite mixes of that era. Bloody brilliant. http://www.mixcloud.com/YeahRadio/timo- ... pril-2000/ [Timo Maas's Dirty Trancing Mixmag CD... those of you who saw the prog discussion in the other thread, give this a listen!]

That mixmag cd! It's still in my cd collection. It's one of the few mixmag cds that I kept from back then.

I actually bought quite a bit of timo maas at that time. I've also got his "music for the maases" album on vinyl. And they did that muse, sunburn remix that I quite liked.

Oh how times have changed.

Wow he looks like shit. I guess it''s been 10 years or so since I've seen him, but they haven't been kind to him lol.
I never knew he had a ghost writer, that's funny. My friend used to make fun of me for buying a couple of his records back then. I liked a couple of tracks like City Borealis/Nightjacker but I guess I never liked his stuff enough to find out more about it...

On the other hand, I've known Goldie to do this since the 90s (Rob Playford etc)
