Man.. Wish I could tape that vid to my desk
Funny, cos Sam & I were talking about something similar the other day. I said that in hindsight, its useless bringing in someone elses track for arrangement into your daw as some kind of template.
Their track is probably a different length etc.. in relation to the amount of interesting sounds that YOU have.
Their track follows one equation & your elements need to follow another. Better to make a 5 to 6 min track, than try & stretch 5mins of good stuff out to 7 or 8mins & get crestfallen that it aint working out.
I just go with the elements that I have now. Theres only so many more percussion / hat lines that you can throw in lol
Totally agree with what yerman was saying. Makes sense. Need to seperate yourself sometimes from nearly all the outside pressures so that you can just enjoy the music. I made so many loops for so long, trying to work shit out - and you need to do that too.. but its remembering to spend time on the music itself & getting your own style.
Thats why its good to see shit like this every once in a while. Word.

This is a neat video and the guy talks a lot of sense. I do pretty much exactly the same thing and it will sap my confidence and motivation.
One good thing is that it seems to be relative. When I compare my tracks to the pros, at best mine are "getting there", but compare the stuff I can do today with what I was capable of a couple of years ago and they're tons and tons better in all areas except raw flukiness.
It's taken me a long time to develop the skills to get to this (amateur) stage and I'll be fucked if I'm going to stop now just as things are beginning to come together

We're all our own worst critiques, aren't we?! That's why everyone else says good things about our music.
