(DISCLAIMER_NOT AIMED AT ANYONE)

Do you really need a website if you have nothing on it?

When I visit some sites, the site is a whole load of nothing, if you get me. Its kinda pointless in a way. Like a shrine to "ME".

Not getting at anyone here btw.. just saying what I think when I have the misfortune to visit a bad one. Sometimes you see them & its got so much stuff about the subject person, with no sense of humour or even sense of reason for interest. Some of them are really 1 dimensional, arent they. Thats the risk I suppose when you are talking about yourself.. you wanna do it in a way that you wont come over like a fkn cock :)

Its almost as if pictures & a few mixes is enough. I dont think it is. Less is more is something that seems to fit all areas of life (except when it comes to length & girth). A page or 2 with a bio, tracks & a few photos is enough.. unless you have something extra going on thats really interesting that needs to be shared.

The worst ones I've ever seen are all Trance acts. Its obvious when someone has no sense of humour / irony and is pushing filler (and not updating content). A flashy website with no substance is just like a fart in a bag IMO :)

So I'd say save your money if the answer is no.. or organise it if the answer is yes. I'd rather the money for something else if there was no need atm.. :)

I really think it depends where you are in your musical career - if your famous you probably not going to bother with fb sc etc etc - or someone is posting for you - so then a website can be off use

The other advantage is I suppose you look more professional to promoters and labels

I have a shitty little site and was thinking if it is pointless as well. It's up for renewed now and I can't decide if it's worth doing. I might renew it one more time just to see. The idea of the site really was just to link everything in on place, but I suppose tgat can be done on sc and fb anyway.

This reminds me tgat it really needs updating as i haven't done any maintenance for months lol

I think that Booking agencies will take more on consideration having a good Website than a simple and crappy
one

And now there is onesheet.com (one sheet does plenty...)

If you ask me, a personal website is useless unless you are established and have traffic.
When is the last time you checked a band/producer/dj's website, nevermind someone that isn't doing gigs ..

it can be a good idea to have your own domain name hooked up to google domains. then you can have your emails as info@yourdomain (whatever) and run them from a gmail with tons of space and basically 100% uptime. i've set up a few people like this because it looks good on business cards. better than vaginaboobs69@hotmail.com or billyg6543@yourisp.net :)

only thing i don't particularly like is when labels have facebook as their main site. i used to have an fb but don't any more because i kind of hate it.

imo theres nothing wrong with having a website which does nothing but redirect people to wherever your established online presence (soundcloud page for instance).

Yeah I did it all myself, it's pretty basic but I'm not making any money from music at th moment ;)

Theres a few that I want to change but I don't know how to, like the contact page has a white background and I would like to change the colour to grey but can't work out how to Change the code on that particular "element"

There's a good breakdown of the elements here if you're using css.

http://www.sitepoint.com/style-web-forms-css/

the 'textarea' tag will get at your comment section.
it's just a matter of going through the html tags you're using for the rest of the text boxes.

only thing is there's 3 .css files listed which is a little bit confusing.

If you have access to your web server logs you can see everything. What links they click, where they come from before your page (referrer), whether they're trying to hack you, all kinds of good stuff :-)

Most hosting companies give some form of access to the logs, but if it's direct access or via a monitoring or logging application will depend on the company.

I say yes if you are serious about your music. But putting your money where your mouth is can be risky. I have gendemik.co.uk which has changed in format since it was concieved back in 2005. If you produce music or mix regularly and want to show your wares and think your own site is a deffinite must, think again. When i started our site they wasn't any accessible media sharing sites like files share or mix hosts and video streaming hosts. It started as a winter project back then to allow a few friends to stream for free aka webcasting. Running a site can take a lot of time out of your production schedule and extra cost could be put elsewhere ie into your productivity. For me the site is part of what i do as a package, i experiment in media as for fun when not spitting music out.

A shrine like self obscessed site is not the way to go until you can afford a pr crew "true!". I use mine for communication, support, promotion and all importantly product web image.

for traffic there are a few free analytics out there best of all is google, most hosts have webalizer installed these days. Nothin beats a good old inline click counter though.

Traffic for gendemik is monitored in so many ways. from mixcloud plays. visits. uniques and new.
recently my soundcloud took an influx in new followers from out of no where. A good sign you may ask!?

A key thing to remember when running a site or showing your media too the world is: "remember it is really easy to make the wrong impression and look shit!" oh and "keep it tightly controlled!"

facebook have made websites redundant. i never do anything to the N&N site which is poor on my part, but then unless you know what you are doing or have spare cash sites are expensive shrines like you say.
